Phoenix murder suspect dies in custody

PHOENIX racial attack suspect Jeetendra Jaikissoon (39) died in hospital on Friday, 22 October following a short illness.

This was confirmed by the Department of Correctional Services spokesman, Singabakho Nxumalo.

“I can confirm that a remand detainee passed on at King Edward VIII Hospital on Friday afternoon, 22 October,” said Nxumalo.

Jaikissoon was in custody at Westville Prison when he complained of chest pains and feeling unwell. He was then transferred to King Edward VIII Hospital.

“A detailed investigation will be launched and will be assisted by a postmortem report in determining the cause of death,” said Nxumalo.

The deceased and two others, Ned and Dylan Govender, were facing a murder charge after the death of matric pupil Mondli Majola (19) on 12 July.

The three, who were arrested a short while after the killing, are still trying to apply for bail and Daily Sun has been following their case from the beginning.

On Friday, the People’s Paper reported that Majola’s family wants the state to investigate the first forensic pathologist who issued a report that Mondli was killed from stab wounds.

Majola’s body was exhumed for a second postmortem on 12 October.

The exhumation was ordered by the state after the lawyer of the three accused told the court they should walk free since the report of the first pathologist says Majola succumbed to stab wounds while the investigation officer insisted they should not get bail as he obtained a video footage showing the accused allegedly shooting Majola.

On Wednesday, 20 October it was heard in court that the first postmortem was not true when it said the Majola died from stab sounds. According to the second report by another pathologist, Majola succumbed to gunshot wounds as per the testimony of the investigation officer.

The case is going back to court on Thursday, 28 October.
