Ex-Minister Kasrils lays blame on government’s database

Former Minister of Intelligence Ronnie Kasrils says the grievances of military veterans could have been easily addressed.

The veterans are demanding millions in gratuity payments. Kasrils says this shows that there are gaps in the government’s database system.

This comes after three government ministers were held hostage by war veterans on Thursday evening.

He said, “in 2011, the Military Veteran’s Act was passed and that did open up and I think it was a great error a further assessment of who should qualify as military veterans but in accordance with that particular act, there is absolutely no question on promises about R4-million about land and such.”

“They had databases as well of which they carried from the Modise period they might have allowed the more names to be added there but it’s absolutely clear that there are bogus people, and bogus organizations people… who could never have fought in the struggle, who do not look as though they are 45 and over.”
