Kwesta sues Telkom for R1.5 million in Unpaid royalties

One of South Africa biggest Hip Hop artist Kwesta and award winning USA musician known as Wale they have decided to take Telkom to court due to unpaid royalties from their hit song “Spirit”. The big Telecoms giant used the song on commercial advert and its prepaid products.Kwesta

According to report Wale’s recording company Sheer Music and Bridge IP wich represent the producer Neo Makwa. They are have taken telecommunication giant and two other companies to Johannesburg High Court last week.

This comes after telecoms giant Telkom, Wunderman Marketing and Wunderman Thompson refused to pay the duo R1.5 million in royalties for using their song in the famous Telkom advert.

The company said they used R859 500 for radio adverts, TV and Youtube for 20 months, an additional R702 000 was for behind the scene short film.

Both artist are now pleading with the court to grant them judgement against the 3 companies.

Telkom spokesperson Moeketsi Mocumi said they can’t give more details for now, as the matter is before court. He confirmed that Telkom is aware of the pending litigation.
