Kwaito star empower women

Kwaito star Billy The Queen aims to empower hopeless female entertainers.

From owning a production company, to working along famous kwaito stars in her debut album, Billy said female entertainers shouldn’t be shy or afraid to dream big and act on their dreams.

In her more than a decade existence as an artist, the bubbly 35-year-old singer told Daily Sun that it hasn’t been an easy journey.

“I was only able to release my album now. It was not easy but I pushed and pushed. I was surrounded mostly by men, and as a young-still-learning woman, men can be intimidating. But my dream was to release an album and own a company one day. I acted on it and it became a reality,” said Billy, whose real name is Zanele Joja.

Her production company, Billy84 Films, has shot music videos for various artists in Durban.

n her experience as a singer, she has worked with the likes of Professor, Joocy, Emza and DJ Sox.

Billy defines her music as old school kwaito.

“I’m the queen of the kwaito. I love this kind of music because it touches the soul and blow ones mind. It reminds me of the days of Mdu Masilela, Brenda Fassie and Trompies. Well, I’m bringing back those days and I’m encouraging women who feel that doors are closed for them to wake up, do things for themselves and they will see the results,” said Billy.

She said she’s preparing to release a single soon.

“I’m working with Trevor King on the single,” she said.
