Earthquake hits South Africa

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit South Africa at around 06:34 on Friday. The tremor was centred in the south of Johannesburg on the outskirts of Katlehong, near Alberton, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The exact coordinates of the source of the quake was 26.342°S 28.227°E, and it happened at a depth of 5.0 km, the USGS stated.

South Africans around Gauteng reported feeling the effects of the earthquake, with several people saying they were worried the buildings they were in might collapse. Grew up in a time when we had frequent mining related tremors. This was the worst I’ve experienced!” a person from Boksburg stated.

“Was woken up with windows rattling and lots of noise,” another witness from Ekurhuleni said. In Germiston, a person said that the rumbling was very loud just before the shaking. Everything shook but the duration was only a few seconds,” they said. The South African Council for Geoscience’s systems reported detecting a magnitude 3.4 earthquake near Boksburg.

“Earthquake information published on the Council for Geoscience website is obtained from waveforms recorded by the South African National Seismograph Network,” it stated.

“The information provides both automated and analysed assessment of the earthquake parameters. Viewers of the website are cautioned that the parameters shown are considered preliminary, unless otherwise indicated.
