RISA launches SA’s first national music charts

THE Recording Industry of South Africa has launched the first South African national music charts.

The charts were launched last month and RiSA spokesman Lesley Mofokeng spoke to us about what inspired the charts.

“We were inspired by the changes in how people are consuming music and the advancement of technology, made it easy for us to start this. Our CEO, Advocate Nhlanhla Sibisi, worked on this for a year,” said Lesley.

“He got contributions and collaborations with a company called BMat. They came on board as an aggregator to help us put together the charts and they are finally here,” he said.

Lesley said they felt it was important for people to know which songs are being listened to.

“It’s important for us to know what we are listening to as a nation, it helps with the development of the industry and understanding what South Africans are about, what we appreciate, what we like and how are we competing in the world,” he said.

“What’s on the charts now are singles that are streaming on digital streaming platforms, Apple Music, Deezer and Spotify. We take those three and we aggregate every week, to see what South Africans are listening to. It’s important to know where we are in terms of music,” he said.

RiSA hopes the charts will develop the South African music industry more.

“We hope it will develop the industry and encourage friendly and healthy competition among artists. The charts are up and down, they change every week. It’ll be fun for people to watch that,” he said.

The Weekly Top 200 Tracks include both local and international music streamed in the country and Weekly Top 100 Local ZA Tracks are released every Thursday at noon.
