Toyota SA Executive Chair Dr Johan van Zyl dies

Executive Chairperson of Toyota South Africa, Dr Johan van Zyl, has passed away at the age of 63.

Van Zyl passed away on Saturday from COVID-19-related complications in a Pretoria hospital.

He started his long career with the automobile manufacturer in 1993 and served as CEO of Toyota Africa and Europe before his retirement earlier this year.

Dr van Zyl began his career with Toyota in 1993, when he was appointed Director of Vehicle Sales & Dealer Network for Toyota South Africa.

He was promoted to the role of President and COO of TSA in 2002, before becoming President and CEO in 2003. In June 2009, he was appointed as Managing Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and became CEO of the Africa Region in April 2013.

In 2015, he took on the role of President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe (TME) and became a Senior Managing Officer of TMC in April 2017. Dr van Zyl retired from TME at the end of March this year but remained as Chairman of TSA on his return to South Africa.

In a statement, Toyota South Africa said the passing of ‘the doc’, as he was affectionately known, was a great loss to the automotive industry, as he not only contributed to the success of Toyota both locally and internationally but played a pivotal role in the sector’s growth.

Sihle Zikalala, Premier of KwaZulu-Natal – where Toyota SA is based, paid tribute to van Zyl, calling him “one of the most formidable business minds that the country has ever produced”.

“Dr van Zyl worked tirelessly to support the efforts of the country to market the automotive sector in KZN and South Africa globally. A giant of the business world has fallen. Dr van Zyl supported government programmes for the transformation of our economy and the building of a prosperous South Africa. KZN benefitted immensely from his wisdom and servant leadership which built Toyota South Africa into a global player with firm roots in KZN,” said Zikalala.

Zikalala extended condolences to the van Zyl family, friends and colleagues: “We wish members of his family, his friends, and associates strength during this difficult time and hope. May they find comfort in the knowledge that Dr Van Zyl’s life was a life well lived and in service of the country.”

Kenya suspends 5 referees over match-fixing charges

Kenya on Saturday announced the provisional suspension of five top football league referees over allegations of match-fixing and the manipulation of national league results.

Two of the suspended referees, Raymond Onyango and Isaac Memusi, were dropped from the list of FIFA referees at the start of this season after failing match fitness tests.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) said the decision was taken to safeguard the integrity of the sport, which came under the spotlight after four players were banned — one of them for life — by FIFA in February 2020 for taking part in “an international conspiracy to fix league matches”.

“The federation’s Integrity Department, with the assistance of FIFA, has initiated preliminary investigations against the said individuals with a view of establishing their involvement, if any, in the said match manipulation practices,” FKF general secretary Barry Otieno said in a statement.

In May, FIFA announced the expulsion of top Kenyan football club Zoo Kericho from this season’s Premier League after being found guilty of match-fixing.

Otieno said the federation remains confident about the integrity of the Premier League.

The federation has, with the assistance of FIFA, “established and consistently continues to update its match manipulation detection platform, with a view of protecting and safeguarding the integrity of its competitions, against global match-fixers”.

Connie Ferguson breaks silence on her husband’s death

Veteran actress and media mogul Connie Ferguson has finally broken her silence following the untimely death of her husband, Shona on Friday, 30 July 2021.

Ours is a once in a lifetime kind of love. We joked about how we were going to be in our old age. How we would take turns supporting each other and being strong for each other.

”The irony is we have already been doing that for the past 20 years! Oh how God has loved me to give me YOU! My SOULMATE!????????

“I’m struggling to process everything that’s going on! It all just feels like a horrible nightmare that I can’t wake up from!??I feel like I’m living in a twilight zone!????I keep asking God WHY? Why Lord?????Please help me understand!??I trust you! I trust you to see me and my family through this!????Please give me and my family the strength to carry on, and continue our hero’s legacy!????Only YOU can!????

“SHO, my ANGEL, my LOVE, my SKAT, my LAAITIE. We share a once in a lifetime kind of love, a love like no other that surpasses all understanding! A love that outlives even death! You and I WILL meet again when God decides it’s time. In the meantime you live on in our hearts. You’ve owned my heart from the day we met 20 years ago today, and there you will live until we meet again!??Rest now angel.

As we contemplate our tomorrow, let your body rest and your spirit soar. You are reunited with the Lord, your first LOVE!????I miss you, I love you, and I will never forget you! MY ANGEL!??”

Energy Department announces hefty fuel price hike for August

The energy department has announced that fuel prices are going up in the month of August.

In a statement released on Saturday, the department said the petrol price will go up by 91 cents per litre for both grades, while diesel will increase by between 54 and 55 cents per litre.

Illuminating paraffin is set to cost 50 cents per litre.

The department said the new prices will kick in at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, the Automobile Association (AA) warned August would bring with it news of a fuel price increase.

The association predicted a significant rise in the price of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin month-end.

At the time, the AA said the daily Rand to US dollar exchange rate had spiked as well as international oil prices.

“The AA’s forecast, based on mid-month data, indicates that petrol is set for an increase of 87 cents per litre; diesel 58 cents per litre; and illuminating paraffin 56 cents. The weakening rand, as a result of the riots, will, however, play a major role as the exchange rate is a major indicator for the local fuel price.”

Iconic scenes that made SA fall in love with Shona Ferguson

As the news of Shona Ferguson‘s death sends shock waves through the Mzansi community, SA remembers his very best moments in front of the camera.

The actor’s family confirmed that Ferguson died from Covid-19-related complications on Friday afternoon.

“It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Mr Shona Ferguson. He passed away at noon today [Friday]. Mr Ferguson’s untimely passing was due to Covid-19-related complications, and not a heart operation as reported in the media.”

The family asked for privacy as they mourn his untimely death.

“We ask that you give the family time to process this painful loss and respect their space during this time. More details will be shared in due course.”

In recent years, the star was best known for portraying Jerry Maake on The Queen, a Ferguson Films production.

However, his career began more than a decade ago and he featured in big productions such as Muvhango, The Wild, Rockville and the Netflix drama series Kings of Joburg.

From hunky heart throb to mob boss, here are some of Shona’s best acting moments:

The Queen (2016)

The Gift (2015)

Kings of Jo’Burg (2020)

Last month, the actor opened up about some of the difficulties he faced in the early stages of his career. He said some of the people who discouraged him were fellow actors who said he did not have real talent. Some of them were later on his payroll at Ferguson Films.

“I don’t hold grudges the same way I don’t listen to anybody’s opinion about my life,” he tweeted.

Shona also recounted how he had tried his luck in Hollywood, where he was apparently asked if he had a backup plan because his acting career was not going to work out.

“17 years ago a Hollywood producer asked me if I had a backup plan. I was obviously shattered because I had just done multiple takes of an audition. He continued to say: ‘You don’t have what it takes.’

“An agent told me it wasn’t going to be easy to get me jobs because I didn’t have the right ‘look’. A veteran actor loved and respected by millions told me I am not memorable, and so did a lot of producers. Many actors criticised me and made bets I would never make it in this industry.”

Police officer hijacked, shot and bundled in boot of a car

A Mpumalanga police officer was shot and bundled in the boot of a car just days after two charred bodies of North West cops were found in their state vehicle.

While the North West officers were not so lucky, the Mpumalanga cop managed to escape with his life to tell the tale.

Police are now hunting for his attackers.

Mpumalanga Police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said the officer in question is a constable based at Bushbuckridge police station.

On Tuesday, July 27, 2021 the cop was on his way home to prepare for his night shift duties when a white Toyota Tazz without a registration number abruptly stopped in front of him.

Hlathi said three suspects armed with a firearm, got out of their car and went straight to him.

“They pointed him with the firearm, dragged him out of his car, and shot him on his lower body before putting him inside the boot of his car.

“The suspects drove with him and later stopped at Shatale village where they dropped him off on the street. They drove away in his private car which was later found left abandoned at Matsikitsane area in the bushes,” he said.

Passers-by helped the officer who was then taken to hospital for medical treatment. No one has been arrested yet, Hlathi said.

In another incident, three men who have been linked to the hijacking of another police officer have been arrested.

Jerry Sfiso Ubisi, 31, and Fannie Sibande, 37, appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and were remanded in custody.

Hlathi said reports indicate that the two were among a group of three armed men who allegedly hijacked an off duty police constable.

The officer was driving his private vehicle next to the R23 Road near the Balfour/Grootvlei intersection at low speed due to speed humps.

Allegations are that three heavily armed men then appeared in front of his vehicle and pointed firearms at him.

“They then held him hostage and robbed him of his service firearm with ammunition as well as an undisclosed amount of cash, assaulted him, and forced him to lie down at the back seat of his vehicle.

“They also took his bank cards, ID document, and other belongings. The suspects are said to have then dropped him off next to the road near Vosloorus and drove away with the stolen items and his vehicle as well as his service firearm.”

The suspects later took out the number plates off the officer’s vehicle and replaced them with false ones.

However, the car tracking company and the police spotted the vehicle being used by the suspects to tow a silver-grey Ford Fiesta sedan which seemed to have had a breakdown.

“Upon noticing the security forces, one suspect escaped whilst the two were cornered. Police opened a case accordingly and locked the men up, charged them hence they were remanded in custody during their first court appearance. The third suspect is still at large and sought by police,” Hlathi said.

Police urge anyone with information that may assist them in tracing the whereabouts of the suspects who hijacked the officer in Bushbuckridge to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Albert Manzini at 082 469 1031, or call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111.

Alternatively, members of the public can send information via MYSAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.

The Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela has welcomed the arrests made and also ordered for the arrest of the remaining suspects.

“The attack on any law enforcement official is an attack against the state and it will never be tolerated or go unpunished. We are adamant that the other suspects will be brought to book soon,” said General Manamela.

6 arrested for allegedly stealing firearms from police station in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga police have arrested six men for various crimes, including the unlawful possession of high-calibre firearms suspected to have been stolen from a police station in Bushbuckridge.

The suspects, aged between 24 and 66, were arrested on Thursday and charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, conspiracy to commit business robbery, as well as attempted murder.

Police spokesperson in the province, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, said the group was arrested during an intelligence-driven operation by various police units.

“The suspects were intercepted in Bushbuckridge, possibly planning a robbery using three firearms, two high-calibre rifles and a revolver were which were seized,” Hlathi said in a statement.

He said police received information about a white Mazda single cab bakkie, which was spotted with a group of men at the back.

Police ordered the driver to stop the bakkie but were ignored resulting in a high-speed chase.

The suspects then began firing shots towards police, damaging their vehicle.

According to police, one suspect was shot and sustained an injury when police fired back shots at the bakkie.

“Meanwhile, another was injured whilst trying to flee by jumping from their vehicle while it was moving.

“The vehicle of the suspects overturned and police swiftly arrested the four other suspects. The injured suspects are currently receiving medical attention in hospital under police guard.”

Police station robbery
Hlathi said the police investigation would also look into whether the suspects were involved in other criminal activities elsewhere.

“Police also suspect that one of the firearms, might have been stolen from a robbery that took place at Bushbuckridge police station sometime last year or robbed from a tactical response team member early this year,” he said.

The suspects were expected to appear at Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Five men found guilty for the murder of Rhythm City actor Dumisani Masilela

5 men have been found guilty for the murder of Rhythm City actor Dumisani Masilela.

The five Bongani John Masombuka, 34, of Tembisa, along with Sfundo Harrison Nkosi, 30, Khumbuzo Solomon Mukhuba, 27, Brian Makhubedu, 24, and Mashudu Malema, 31, all from Ivory Park, will appear for sentencing proceedings in the North Gauteng High Court on Monday, August 2, exactly five years to the day since the actor’s tragic shooting.

While handing down judgment, Judge Papi Mosopa said the five engaged in an orgy of criminal activities, after having hijacked another car before attempting to hijack Masilela.

“Accused 1 (Nkosi), 2 (Masombuka), 4 (Makhubedu), and 5 (Malema) made confession statements but later said to have done so under duress. Despite this, they failed to bring their own witnesses to prove that they were not behind any of the crimes committed even after they took to the stand,” said Mosopa.

He found the five guilty of Masilela’s murder, despite claims made by four of the accused that Mukhuba was the triggerman. While summarising the facts of the trial, Mosopa gave an overview of Bongani Khumalo, Masilela’s friend who was present when the shooting occurred.

“The witness said a person alighted from a vehicle that had stopped behind the deceased’s car while they were sitting in it. He said the man went to Dumi’s side of the vehicle, took out a firearm from his waist, then they heard a loud bang,” said Mosopa.

Masilela was shot in the abdomen on August 2 2017 and died in hospital a day later.

“He said the deceased then drove off and told him (Khumalo) that he was shot. They reached a certain point in Tembisa where they changed seats and he drove the deceased to Tembisa hospital before going to the police station to open a case. While at the police station, he heard that Masilela had died.”

Family, friends, and members of the public seated in the court gallery breathed a sigh of relief after Mosopa handed down the judgment. Sentencing will be handed down on Monday, while Masiilela’s mother, Sabatha Masilela is expected to testify about how her son’s death affected her.

Naomi Campbell Pens Letter To Former President Jacob Zuma

International supermodel and actress Naomi Campbell left South Africans divided with her lengthy letter to the former president Jacob Zuma.

In the letter, the actress speaks about the unrests that took place in the past few weeks in South Africa.

Campbell said this is not South Africa that she knows, she said she has realized how the former president has avoided appearing before the Zondo Commission.

Her letter read: “Dear Former President Jacob Zuma, This isn’t the South Africa I remember and that millions of South African’s fought for. The South Africa that overcame Apartheid, showed the world that change was possible. Led the battle in the fight against HIV/AIDS and has weathered countless efforts to undermine the new South Africa.

“I have watched how over the last few years you have protested your innocence at the allegations tabled against you of corruption and allowing mass State Capture. I have seen you got out of your way to avoid having to deal with these matters in court and avoid a commission set up to investigate State Capture. You have talked of the rule of law and the South African constitution being something that should apply to everyone. Yet you defied the courts and were sentenced to 15 months in prison.”

She continued to speak about how the actions of the former president have affected the country. She said he must appear before the Zondo Commission and take responsibility.

Now upon your incarceration, a group of protests under the #Freezuma banner broke out igniting the worst violence and criminality South Africa has seen since the end of apartheid. These actions not only saw hundreds lose their lives and property be destroyed. But its effects will now be felt by many millions more. This affects the millions of hard-working and peaceful South Africans many whom have suffered over the last year because of Covid.

“Each day you defy the courts and stoke division you take a step backward from Madiba’s vision for South Africa to prosper and for their not only be equitable political justice but also economic justice. If you still consider yourself a leader then please act and take responsibility like one. Agree to finish your appearance in front of the State Capture commission and equally you will have your days in court to contest the corruption charges alleged against you. . . Put the Nation first PEACE IN SOUTHAFRICA ❤️πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ™πŸΎ#NAOMIAFRICA.”

South Africans have since reacted to the letter, Here are few reactions from Twitter.

DA wants Zweli Mkhize fired as SIU seeks to recover R150 million from Digital Vibes

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Friday called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to “show his mettle” and appoint a permanent minister of health who is capable and beyond reproach, to replace suspended Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize.

This after the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) filed a founding affidavit to the Special Tribunal on Thursday.

The SIU is seeking to review and set aside the multimillion-rand irregular tender that was awarded by the national Department of Health to Digital Vibes – a company owned by Mkhize’s associates.

It has been almost a month since Ramaphosa received the SIU’s final report on the matter, but he insists that he was still studying it and appealed for space.

SIU confirms legal action
SIU head, advocate Andy Mothibi, revealed during a webinar on Friday that the unit had filed the affidavit on Thursday. He said they wanted to recover the R150 million paid to Digital Vibes between the period of 29 January 2020 to February 2021.

“We have reached the outcomes that we have reached and I can just really say we have found irregularities in the manner in which that contract was procured, and that’s why we’re in court,” Mothibi said.

Digital Vibes was initially contracted to handle the department’s National Health Insurance (NHI) communication work, but its scope was later expanded to include work on the department’s Covid-19 campaigns.

Mothibi declined to comment on media reports that the SIU found that Mkhize pressured senior officials in his department to appoint the company.

But according to a local publication report, Mkhize and his son, Dedani, have been referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) by the SIU to consider charging them for corruption over “suspicious payments” they received from Digital Vibes.

The Daily Maverick’s investigative unit, Scorpio, previously revealed that Digital Vibes purchased a second-hand Toyota Land Cruiser for Mkhize’s son around the same time the health department transferred about R50 million to the company for its services.

Mkhize has always maintained his innocence in the scandal, saying he did not personally benefit from the contract even though his family could have.

‘Final nail in the coffin’
DA MP and spokesperson on health, Siviwe Gwarube, on Friday said Ramaphosa could no longer dither on the future of Mkhize as health minister.

She said the SIU’s affidavit to the Special Tribunal had enough evidence for him to be fired.

“The president no longer has an excuse to table the SIU report handed over to him three weeks ago. Clearly, the SIU has revealed wrongdoing on the part of Minister Mkhize,” Gwarube said in a statement.

Gwarube said this was the “final nail in the coffin for Mkhize” now that the public knows what is in the report.

“We also welcome the move by the SIU to recoup the millions in public funds wasted on the Digital Vibes contract. This is another step closer to accountability for those involved in this scandal,” she said.

“Not only should Mkhize be fired, he must also be criminally investigated and face the full might of the law should he be found guilty.”

Struggling artist get help

STANDARD Bank is lending a helping hand to emerging artists who were part of the National Arts Festival fringe programme.

The bank has started the Bank of Dreams, an initiative that will raise R500 000 for the 125 productions that took part in the virtual fringe programme between 8 and 18 July.

Through the project, the bank is calling on South Africans to send messages of encouragement to artists who were part of the programme.

The Bank of Dreams has a portal where people who watched the festival could leave messages and for every message written, the bank will donate money. Sponsorship manager Dianne Graney said the target was to reach 3 700 messages.

“This is in line with the 37 years the bank has been a successful part of the National Arts Festival. As a bank that has helped the arts for a long time, we had to consider how the arts have been affected by Covid-19,” she said.

“We thought about what we could do and looked at the fringe artists. They have to raise money for themselves to take part in the festival and we know things have been hard for them.”

Dianne said 1 000 artists would benefit. The bank is working with people such as Felipe Mazibuko, David April, Holly Rey, Lesego Seoktsa and Shekhinah to raise awareness of the programme. Mazibuko, a fashion designer, said it was an honour to be part of the project. “Covid-19 has affected me directly. Lamar Odom ordered to pay $400k to ex-lover

Lamar Odom has been ordered to pay his ex nearly $400,000 .after a judge ruled the former NBA star hadn’t pay a cent of support in over a year.

In court docs, obtained by TMZ Sports, a New York judge ruled Odom had stopped making payments to his ex, Liza Morales, in June of last year, despite a 2015 settlement agreement requiring the NBA legend to pay thousands of dollars per month for the benefit of the former couple’s two kids.

In all, the court hit Odom with a $380,549 tab, including $91,220 in outstanding child support, $88,117 in missed rent, $161,305 for their children’s college funds and expenses, and nearly $40k for her legal fees and expenses.

Morales had sued Odom back in May, claiming the former basketball player had missed all the payments he agreed to make since June 2020.

In the court’s ruling, the judge noted Odom did not show up for a key hearing in the case in June “despite due notice.”

Odom and Morales a reality TV star dated for years in the early 2000s and she and their children publicly supported him after his 2015 overdose.

Gauteng probing death of patient at Helen Joseph hospital

The department of health in Gauteng said that it was investigating the death of a 26-year-old woman at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg.

This follows a report by EWN about a Johannesburg mother who allegedly found her daughter dead in the same spot she had left her – in a hospital waiting area – more than 24 hours after seeking help from staff.

The department said it instituted an investigation to establish the circumstances around the death of the patient.

“An update will be provided on the matter upon finalization of the investigation into this matter. We wish to convey our sincere condolences to the patient’s family,” the department said in a statement.

According to the report, Nqobile Dube rushed her critically ill daughter, Sichelesile, to the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg, and by late Tuesday afternoon, she had passed away, still sitting in her wheelchair with her mouth and eyes wide open.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has since blamed the provincial government for the ordeal and said that this was a highlight of the neglect that “many patients have experienced at Helen Joseph’s casualty, which is grossly overcrowded with patients who can wait days before being admitted to a ward.”

“Instead of assisting the Helen Joseph, the Gauteng Health Department has dithered in reopening the safe parts of CMJH and wasted huge amounts of money in building extra beds in the wrong areas without staff and equipment,” said DA’s shadow MEC for Jack Bloom.

He said that the situation had worsened with the Covid-19 epidemic as well as the extra burden of patients who would have gone to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital (CMJH) which has been largely closed since it was engulfed by fire back in April.

Bloom said that a complete overhaul of the Gauteng health department was needed to ensure that money is spent effectively to ensure adequate staff and equipment at all public hospitals.

Ace Magashule applies for leave to appeal suspension at SCA

Media reports suggests that suspended ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule has officially applied for leave to appeal his suspension at the Supreme Court of Appeal.

This was according to news reports by broadcaster NewzroomAfrika on Friday evening.

Magashule suffered a blow when the Johannesburg High Court ruled that the ANC constitution was consistent with that of the country and that the decision to suspend him was effected in terms of the party’s constitution.

Immediately after that judgment, Magashule said his legal team was considering and analysing it, and announced that he did not need to second-guess his next move.

“On my part, there is not even any need to study the judgment,” said Magashule.

“It is clearly legally wrong and not in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. I have therefore instructed my legal team to take immediate steps towards appealing this incorrect judgment,” Magashule said after the judgment.

“One does not need to be a lawyer to grasp this contradiction. Also, to say that the suspension of Ramaphosa is invalid, even though it breached the resolution of the Nasrec national conference, is clearly wrong.”

“The idea that a suspension done in terms of rule 25 of the ANC constitution is not punitive, but ‘precautionary’, only needs to be stated to be rejected. Rule 25 consisted of the disciplinary codes of the ANC. On these and many other obvious misdirections of the court, we are confident that the higher courts will deal with the matter appropriately and without fear, favour or prejudice. Justice must not have eyes,” he said.

Magashule said he was confident that his legal team, led by advocate Dali Mpofu, was capable of convincing a higher court that his suspension was unconstitutional

“I can assure you that this is the best legal team. We will appeal because there are issues that Judge [Jody] Kollapen said are very complex and I think a higher court can come to another decision, which will be fair.”

Magashule is arguing that the party’s step-aside rule is unconstitutional and flouts the principle that an accused is innocent until proven guilty.

SA violent unrests: Here is how Gauteng plans to turn its economy around

While the impact of the recent riots in Gauteng is estimated to be at just over R3 billion, the province has several interventions which including funding instruments as a part of its reconstruction and recovery plan.

MEC for Economic Development Park Tau said that the unrests happened at a time when the province was beginning to accelerate the reconstruction of it economy.

“A survey is currently underway interfacing with actual enterprises on the ground about the impact of the riots,” said Tau.

According to the presentation made on Friday during virtual briefing, these interventions include a R250 million allocation from the provincial government.

The briefing discussed the province’s economic reconstruction and recovery plan following the recent violent protests, which led to the destruction and looting of businesses in some parts of the province.

A local publication earlier reported that Gauteng was one of the two main provinces that experienced looting and violence during the unrest.

Premier David Makhura revealed earlier that 30 out of 500 malls/shopping centres in the province were affected by the violence, this is in the townships of Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg, three areas in Tshwane, one area in the west rand, and two areas in Sedibeng.

In addition, the provincial government gave a preliminary estimate of the cost damage which sits at R3.5 billion with 14 500 jobs also affected.

In his presentation, Tau stated that the rebuild is at different stages. Still, the provincial government anticipates that many of the facilities will open from August and September and that most of the impact is in the retail sector.

“In developing our response package, we have undertaken international benchmarks as to what other countries have done in instances where they have experienced similar riots,” Tau said.

The intervention strategy to be coordinated/led by the provincial government includes, but is not limited to

  • Establishment of economic rebuilding and [the] acceleration [of the] war-room to accelerate key economic initiatives.
  • Partnership to support fast-moving consumer goods and logistics supply chains displaces from KZN
  • Food security and income support.
  • Incentivising and supporting rebuilding with a focus on retail and associated logistics through a combination of financial legislative and administrative support and,
  • Focus on rapid deployment rebuilding funding and township industrialization funding using the Gauteng Township Economy Partnership Fund as a platform. Makhura earlier mentioned that the preliminary R3.5 billion figure did not include many uninsured township-based businesses.

In his presentation, Tau explained that R100 million of the fund has been allocated to a rapid deployment township rebuilding effort, which will be matched by private sector contribution.

“The intent is to provide funding that will be 50% grant/50% loans, with a cap of R1 million for smaller formal businesses in distress, and up to 50k for informal businesses,” Tau said.

Makhura said the province has sufficient instruments in its hands and that Gauteng does not need to declare a state of disaster.

DA calls for SAPS devolution

The Democratic Alliance is calling for a devolution of the South African Police Services (Saps) after its National Commissioner Khehla Sitole admitted before the Portfolio Committee on Thursday that the force will be handicapped in fulfilling its mandate following organizational restructuring.

The Saps force is currently undergoing restructuring to trim its personnel to meet budget requirements.

The party said that Sitole’s concession was clearly evident in the recent civil unrests that engulfed KwaZulu Natal (KZN) and Gauteng (GP) that left 33O people dead and scores of businesses and workers in limbo while police seemed unable and sometimes unwilling to intervene.

The DA said that the recent events were evident that Saps was poorly managed resulting to its failure to carry its mandate to protect and serve the public.

“Not only has Saps suffered from budget cuts, but also years of mismanagement by career politicians who have never had boots on the ground,” said DA’s Shadow Minister of Police Okkie Terblanche.

He said that the only way to bring back the police force to its full capability was a devolution.

“As it stands, allowing Saps’ power to sit with provinces and municipalities will ensure that needs of local communities are much better met and will allow local crime rate to plummet,” said Terblanche.

“It is not just the unrest in KZN and Gauteng that shows the decline of Saps. Their actions since the start of the extended Covid-19 lockdown shows a service that is wholly incapable of combatting real crime and thus forced to persecute law-abiding citizens in order to satisfy a tyrant bent on “skop, skiet and donner,” said Terblanche.
