Video: Municipality official in big trouble after assaulting woman at Groblersdal Mall parking lot

While a municipal acting chief financial officer is being investigated over a viral video clip of him allegedly assaulting a woman, she has been arrested.

The woman who is insulted by Mpho Maepa, an employee of Limpopo’s Sekhukhune Municipality in the video, was charged with assault and crimen injuria after he opened a case against her at Groblersdal Police Station.

The incident happened at Groblersdal Mall over the weekend after the woman allegedly blocked his car in the parking lot.

Despite the fact that the woman was arrested and the incident didn’t happen on municipal premises, the municipality is taking it seriously.

In a statement, municipal spokesman Moloko Moloto said it was disappointing to see a senior official involved in a case of alleged gender-based violence.

“We have learnt with disgust about a video on social media in which a female is being harassed, insulted and seemingly assaulted by a male employee of the municipality,” the statement read.

“Even though the incident happened outside the workplace and the victim is not a municipal employee, we still do not take kindly to it.

“The district municipality is disgusted and disappointed that one of its officials perpetuated gender-based violence, a social ill that has become an intolerably painful affliction in our country.”

In the short video, Maepa can be heard harshly ordering the woman to take her car, which he refers to as trash, from the parking lot.

“Don’t you dare try to disrespect me.

“I don’t care if you are filming me. Take your trash out of my way. I want to go,” a fuming Maepa is heard saying.

He told the SunTeam he couldn’t share details of the incident as it was before court. He said there was a longer video proving he was not in the wrong.

Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo was not available for comment.
