JMPD says very few people complying with lockdown regulations

Weekend figures show people aren’t complying with lockdown regulations and curfew.

That’s according to Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Minnaar says the first weekend of Level 2 of the lockdown saw over 740 people arrested for suspected drunk driving in Gauteng alone.

“Many few people really comply with the COVID lockdown regulations,” Minnaar said.

“We are finding many people without masks and many people drinking in the streets.”

He said alcohol was confiscated.

“There are still many people not complying to the current Level 2 [curfew] regulations,” Minnaar said.

“We still found people hanging around, particularly in the busy areas.”

Minnaar said they are going to continue with their operations.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters on Monday said over 800 people were arrested for various crimes in Gauteng over the weekend.

In one incident, three Tshwane Metro Police officers died in a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver.
