The family of Nathaniel Julius is demanding answers from police. The 16-year-old was shot and killed in Eldorado Park on Wednesday, allegedly by police.
Violent protests broke out on Thursday with police firing teargas, stun grenades and rubber bullets to repel hundreds of angry protesters.
Nathaniel’s mother Bridget Harris said her son was very loving. The way he was shot, he was helpless,” she said.
“He was just a boy. Harris said her son showed her how to be courageous and brave.
“When Nathaniel was a baby I didn’t know he was Down syndrome. I was telling myself that if this little body is going to go through so much, let me walk the walk with him.”
Details are still sketchy around the shooting.
“That’s the thing that I can’t understand. What did he say to be shot? Anybody can see that this is a child,” Harris said.
The family will meet with police officers on Friday.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko called for calm and pleaded with the Eldorado Park community to allow the law to take its course.
Residents burnt tyres and hurled rocks at the police, setting up barricades along the streets and damaging a local police station.
“As the Gauteng Provincial Government we are saddened by the incident,” Mazibuko said.
“We wish to call for calm and ask Ipid to investigate the matter. They’ve removed the docket from the station, they are investigating it at provincial level.”
Police spokeswoman Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said in a brief statement that officers had been deployed to Eldorado Park “following violent attacks by residents who are allegedly accusing police of having shot and killed a 16-year-old boy on Wednesday evening”.
