COVID-19: Govt plan to repatriate more South Africans

International Relations Minister, Naledi Pandor, says plans to repatriate South Africans stranded abroad are being worked on. Recent data made available to us suggests we may have around 1 471 South Africans stranded in various ways in difficult circumstances in different countries across the world”, she said. Many countries across the world are on lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19.

International flights have largely been barred from operating. More than 800 000 people are infected and nearly 40 000 people have died from COVID-19 worldwide. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says South Africans stranded abroad will be allowed to come back home.

“Evacuations are as follows, the evacuation of South African citizens who desire to come back home is allowed provided that he/she has a fully paid return ticket and on arrival they will be subjected to mandatory quarantine for a period of up to 21 days”, said Mbalula.  Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday

Tributes are pouring in for renowned scientist Professor Gita Ramjee, the chief scientific officer for the Aurum Institute and director of the South African Medical Research
Council’s HIV Prevention Research Unit , who died on Tuesday after reportedly suffering Covid-19 related complications. The institute shared the news of Ramjee’s death in a Twitter post on Tuesday night.
