Police in Lentegeur in Cape Town have arrested a man and a woman after they were found with six illegal firearms and ammunition hidden in their car, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape said on Sunday.
Vigilant members attached to the Lentegeur SAPS crime prevention unit arrested a 54-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman at about 11 pm on Saturday night for the possession of prohibited and unlicensed firearms and ammunition, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said.
The officers were conducting routine patrols in Lentegeur when they noticed a white Hyundai Elantra. The driver and passenger “appeared nervous and suspicious”, and officers pulled the car over.
“The passenger refused to comply, got out of the vehicle, and left the scene. Upon searching the vehicle, members noticed that the back panels of the front seats were tampered with, and upon searching, found six firearms of different calibres, several firearm magazines filled with ammunition, and three bags of loose ammunition hidden in the back of the seats.”
The serial numbers of four of the firearms were filed off. The driver was arrested and the woman suspect was later arrested at her residence. Both suspects would appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court once charged, Rwexana said.
Western Cape police commissioner Lt-Gen Yolisa Matakata commended the officers for ensuring that unlicensed firearms and ammunition were removed from communities.
In other news on the Cape Flats, Bonteheuwel residents and police came under fire from gangsters on Thursday as the community protested against the murder of a pregnant resident.
The 30-year-old woman died after being shot at about 5.30 pm on Wednesday and no one has been arrested. The woman, pregnant with twins, was the wife of an alleged gang leader and was killed in what has been called an “assassination”.
