Verification of Cape Town refugees continues until Friday

The verification of hundreds of refugees in Cape Town will continue until Friday. The refugees have been camping around Green Market Square before the City of Cape Town won a court order allowing the City to compel the refugees to comply with local bylaws. It’s unclear if alternative accommodation is available, or where the refugees will be moved to next.

Cape Town MMC for safety and security JP Smith said there is a steady stream of people going for assessments and screening. Smith said 80 families went to Salt River for their paperwork to be processed on Tuesday.

He said more people have joined the groups of refugees staying outside the Central Methodist Church.

Smith stated individual refugees were happy to cooperate with the authorities and claimed refugees were misled and lied to including false translations of the UNHRC officials’ statements. He said the Western Cape Human Settlements MEC will assist vulnerable people in resettling in the community.
