Union concerned about pilchards recall

The Food and Allied Workers’ Union (FAWU) says the recall of the pilchards could be a threat to jobs.

This comes after the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications ordered the removal of certain brands of tinned pilchards from the shelves.

Consumers who recently bought 400-gram tins of pilchards in tomato and chilli sauce manufactured by West Point Processors were told to return them.

The Education Department has also suspended the use of pilchards at schools.

It’s temporarily removed it from the National School Nutrition Menu.

The union said in a statement it would like to encourage fish processors to sort the issue out with urgency.

FAWU’s Zolani Mbanjwa said around 9,000 employees are impacted by the recall.

“It’s going to have a negative impact on the job security of our members,” said Mbanjwa.

“My worry is that the fishing industry itself is in a crisis. This thing now of the canning deficiency… which is also going to have a negative impact to our members.

“I’m saying this because I went to West Point Processors to have a talk with the employees.

“They are also concerned because they can see it’s going to affect the whole industry.”
