Cape Town refugees likely to be removed this weekend

The verification process of the refugees living in and around GreenMarket Square has been completed. It’s been about four months since these refugees and asylum seekers occupied the central Methodist Church.

They also lived on the pavements and streets outside surrounding the church before the City of Cape Town sought the help of the courts to remove them.

One of the refugees said it’s still unclear where they’ll be going.

They fear reintegration will not be simple, since they ran from communities where they weren’t welcome, and this has not changed.

“Where are we going to go? Because the community where we run from they don’t even want to welcome us. They were already preparing genocide in 2020…” he said.
