Actress Altovise Lawrence speaks on overcoming her Fears

Actress Altovise Lawrence has not only made South Africa proud with her sterling acting on international screens, she has also overcome her doubts to also make a name for herself on radio.

Whatever Altovise touches turns to gold, and sis has been unstoppable as she raises the South African flag high, both locally and internationally. But there was a time when she felt like she wasn’t good enough to be on radio.

The YFM DJ and winner of the first season of the reality show Top Actor told her followers recently that she has always loved radio but decided to put a career in broadcasting on hold until she reached the age of 33.

Altovise Lawrence

In a moving post, she reflected on the inferiority complex she had as recently as six months ago.

“After my series of auditions, I told myself that I would not get it because I wasn’t qualified. Why me? Why now? What if I suck and they regret their decision? But I did it. I keep doing it. I am expanding and shape-shifting my way through the arts and seeing myself becoming the artist I dreamed I would become in the distant future,” she wrote.

She gave herself a pat on the back for conquering her fears and doubts – and for doing what she loves.

Altovise Lawrence

Altovise is evidence that under no circumstances should you underestimate yourself. Instead go for what you believe in and never allow fear to obstruct your vision.

Cassper Nyovest offers to teach Mmusi Maimane how to dance to #GoodForThat

It’s hard to imagine, but Abuti Fill Up, aka Cassper Nyovest, is ready and willing to teach former DA leader Mmusi Maimane just how to nail his latest dance for the song Good For That.

Nope, we didn’t make it up. Mxweee struu.

It was quite a random Twitter exchange, or perhaps it was the hype around the #GoodForThatChallenge that plugged Mmusi to Cassper’s new song.

Cassper Nyovest

Mmusi tagged Cassper on the Twitter streets to let him know he’s got a banger of a song. Needless to say, Mufasa was thrilled.

Cassper was so ecstatic he went on to offer Mmusi free dance lesson,s and tweeps couldn’t believe their eyes when Mmusi expressed his excitement about learning the dance.

“I am game. Need to learn that dance asap,” Mmusi said.

Meanwhile, Cassper agreed with one fan that K’sazobalit was a highly “slept on” song. He said the reception of the song led to his “sabbatical” from hip hop because he realised it could have been appreciated more.

However, as Good For That shows, he’s back with a vengeance.

Now we are all waiting for Mmusi to post that video of himself dancing.

Trump calls for calm as first coronavirus death on US soil confirmed

The first fatality from the novel coronavirus has been confirmed on US soil, as President Donald Trump on Saturday urged Americans not to panic.

Health officials said the man who died in Washington state was one of a handful with no known links to global hot zones to have contracted the virus — indicating that the pathogen was now likely spreading in communities.

The death occurred in King County, the most populous in the state and home to Seattle, a city of more than 700,000 people, officials told AFP.

The victim was in his 50s and had “underlying health conditions,” said Jeff Duchin, public health officer for Seattle and King County.

“It is a sad day in our state as we learn that a Washingtonian has died from COVID-19,” Washington state Governor Jay Inslee said in a statement, sending condolences to the victim’s loved ones.

Inslee declared a state of emergency over coronavirus, freeing up funding for state agencies and allowing the use of the Washington National Guard, if necessary.

Speaking at a White House news conference Trump said that “additional cases in the United States are likely,” but added that “healthy individuals should be able to fully recover.”

“Our country is prepared for any circumstance,” Trump insisted, calling on “the media and politicians and everybody else involved not to do anything to incite panic.”

Trump identified the victim as “a wonderful woman,” but the CDC later said it had misinformed the president in an earlier briefing.

Washington state also reported on Saturday the country’s first case of coronavirus in a health care worker and the first possible outbreak in a nursing home.

This comes after the states of Oregon and California confirmed late last week the first instances of infected US patients who had not travelled overseas or come in contact with anyone known to be ill.

“While there is still much to learn about the unfolding situations in California, Oregon, and Washington, preliminary information raises the level of concern about the immediate threat for COVID-19 for certain communities in the United States,” the CDC said.

Toll tariffs to increase from March

Toll tariffs on national roads are going up from Sunday including an increase in fees for the controversial e-tolls in Gauteng.

Wayne Duvenage, CEO of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) said the increase of tolls is nothing new and South Africans should not read too much into it.

Duvenage said the e-toll scheme has collapsed through non-compliance from users and a lack of enforcement from Sanral.

Coronavirus – Expert says South Africans shouldn’t panic

As global concern for the spread of the coronavirus rises, a Stellenbosch University virologist urged South Africans not to panic.

Professor Wolfgang Preiser returned from Brussels this week where he was invited as an expert evaluator of coronavirus research proposals.

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has already warned that it’s not a case of if COVID-19 arrives on local shores, but when.

Preiser says we must be prepared for this eventuality.

“For all intent and purposes, I think a comparison with a new flu strain is really not that wrong. And that means panicking is definitely not advised,” said Presier.

Like with influenza, there are certain members of the public who are at particularly high risk.

It is these people Preiser says would need special attention and care.

“I don’t think we have a complete picture yet of how the new virus behaves.

“But from the publications that have appeared so far, it seems that it is the elderly and the chronically ill who are most badly affected, so those are the patients who will need intensive care unit treatment and who may actually die due to the infection.”

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases says it remains on high alert.

It says measures are in place to detect and manage the disease should it reach South Africa.

Day Zero for Cape Town refugees

It’s Day Zero for removal of refugees who have been camping at the Green Market Square in Cape Town.

The City of Cape Town can on Sunday legally chase them away from there or have them arrested, according to the court order granted over a week ago.

But refugees say they have nowhere to go and that the City cares more about by-laws than human beings.

The City’s JP Smith said people will now be asked to pack up and vacate the pavements and streets they are currently occupying.

“People not complying with the court’s instructions will be liable for arrest and detention at the SAPS in order for the court to continue hearing that matter,” said Smith.

The City says the refugees do not qualify for emergency or alternative accommodation as they are not homeless but rather staging a sit-in protest.

The refugees want to be resettled in a third country they believe will be safe for them.

They are now looking to the UNHCR to assist them with temporary accommodation and to facilitate their exit from South Africa.

Nigerian Pastor Elija Emeka Chibuke who declared war on Coronavirus has been hospitalized in China

Nigerian Pastor Elija Emeka Chibuke who declared war on Coronavirus has been hospitalized in China. Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. Early this week, a Nigerian pastor by name Pastor Elija Emeka Chibuke declared his intentions to travel to China and destroy the deadly coronavirus that has been claiming so many lives across the world especially China.

In humans, coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections that are typically mild, such as the common cold, though rarer forms such as SARS, MERS and COVID-19 can be lethal.

Symptoms vary in other species: in chickens, they cause an upper respiratory tract disease, while in cows and pigs they cause diarrhoea. There are no vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or treat human coronavirus infections.

Coronaviruses comprise the subfamily Orthocoronavirinae in the family Coronaviridae, in the order Nidovirales.

They have enveloped viruses with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome and a nucleocapsid of helical symmetry. The genome size of coronaviruses ranges from approximately 27 to 34 kilobases, the largest among known RNA viruses.

The name coronavirus is derived from the Latin corona, meaning “crown” or “halo”, which refers to the characteristic appearance of the virus particles (virions): they have a fringe reminiscent of a crown or of a solar corona.

Racist Adam Catzavelos has learned his lesson – lawyer

Adam Catzavelos was handed a suspended sentence of R50,000 rand or two years behind bars for calling black people the k-word on a Greek beach – suspended for five years.

Adam Catzavelos said he was grateful for the sentence handed to him while his counsel is adamant the convicted racist has now learned his lesson.

Catzavelos was handed a suspended sentence of R50,000 rand or two years behind bars for calling black people the k-word on a Greek beach – suspended for five years.

The sentence essentially means Catzavelos could be liable to pay the fine or serve two years behind bars if he becomes a repeat offender within this period.

The case was brought forward by the Economic Freedom Fighters in 2018 when it laid the charge at Bramley Police Station.

Catzavelos is still expected to comply with an Equality Court ruling, which ordered him to pay an R150,000 fine to the Seth Mazibuko Foundation, which is run by the foundation’s namesake, who was a 1976 Soweto uprising activist.

His legal counsel, Lawley Shain, hoped the matter will now be put to bed.

“I think the court took into account the circumstances – correctly so – and one of the sentences that I recommended was the imposition of a fine only suspended and that is what has happened.”

Driver escapes serious crash with just a fractured wrist

It is alleged that the bus was standing partially in the emergency lane and partially in the left lane without any warning triangles or lights after breaking down when the vehicle collided with it.

A driver of a car was very fortunate to have escaped with only a fractured wrist after crashing into the rear of a stationary bus and trailer on Friday evening on the N1 approximately 50km north of Bloemfontein, despite the vehicle being mangled.

It is alleged that the bus was standing partially in the emergency lane and partially in the left lane without any warning triangles or lights after breaking down when the vehicle collided with it.

Both southbound lanes were obstructed for several hours for clean-up operations.

The patient was assessed on scene by paramedics before being transported to a hospital in Bloemfontein for further care.

The four occupants of the bus were uninjured.

Over 150 Strandfontein residents ill because of drinking contaminated water

During a community meeting last week, the city said cross-connection had taken place at a local sports field, but at this point, it cannot explain who is responsible or how it actually happened.

Strandfontein residents are taking legal advice after their water was contaminated.

Last week a public meeting was held where the City of Cape Town provided feedback to the community over a confirmed case of cross-contamination.

Recently, residents complained about a sewage-like odour when they opened their taps and the city declared the water safe for consumption last Sunday.

Strandfontein residents saif they do not trust the city to do the contamination investigation, so they will take it upon themselves.

During a community meeting last week, the city said cross-connection had taken place at a local sports field, but at this point, it cannot explain who is responsible or how it actually happened.

Residents were not entirely convinced and after the public meeting formed a task team to seek legal advice about the matter.

Strandfontein Ratepayers and Residents Association’s Mario Oostendurp said more than 150 people had come forward to say they have fallen ill because of drinking the contaminated water.

Health Mayco member Zahid Badroodien said over two days, 24 people went to the local clinic but were not referred to the hospital.

He said if private doctors are seeing a high number of patients with the same complaints they will refer it to the necessary levels.

Supporting Zuma doesn’t mean undermining Ramaphosa – Magashule

Addressing the launch of the party’s new online membership system in Sebokeng, Magashule said the party’s NEC has decided that members can support former President Jacob Zuma.

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Ace Magashule said no one would be banned from the party for supporting former President Jacob Zuma.

Addressing the launch of the party’s new online membership system in Sebokeng, Magashule said the party’s NEC has decided that members can support Zuma.

“So we have taken a decision. You can support and you must support President Zuma. You can wear your ANC t-shirt, that is your right, we can’t ban you.”

Previously, the party banned its members from wearing ANC regalia when supporting the former president in court.

Meanwhile, in his address, Magashule appeared to take a swipe at the National Assembly for inviting former apartheid President FW de Klerk.

“You can’t respect de Klerk and you disregard Zuma.”

However, Magashule was careful to say that supporting Zuma doesn’t mean current President Cyril Ramaphosa will be undermined.

Scores of supporters welcomed the former president at OR Tambo International Airport last week on his return from receiving medical treatment in Cuba.

Zuma is facing corruption charges linked to the multi-billion rand arms deal and expected to appear in court in May.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court issued a warrant of arrest for Zuma when he failed to appear for his corruption case last month.

A PARTY IN DISARRAY

Political analyst Professor Tinyiko Maluleke said Magashule’s speak to a party in disarray.

“He is facing charges that relate to the arms deal and corruption, in a formal and legitimate court of law, in a country ruled by a government where ANC is the majority party – that’s what’s facing president Zuma. To call for support for Zuma is to appeal to that faction of the party that supports him come what may, regardless of what it is he is facing.”

Maluleke said it’s the same NEC that decided that members are not allowed to wear party regalia when supporting the former president in court.

He said he’s not surprised that the ANC had changed its tune, saying it’s clear the latest decision was championed by a faction.

Cape Town refugees likely to be removed this weekend

The verification process of the refugees living in and around GreenMarket Square has been completed. It’s been about four months since these refugees and asylum seekers occupied the central Methodist Church.

They also lived on the pavements and streets outside surrounding the church before the City of Cape Town sought the help of the courts to remove them.

One of the refugees said it’s still unclear where they’ll be going.

They fear reintegration will not be simple, since they ran from communities where they weren’t welcome, and this has not changed.

“Where are we going to go? Because the community where we run from they don’t even want to welcome us. They were already preparing genocide in 2020…” he said.

Union concerned about pilchards recall

The Food and Allied Workers’ Union (FAWU) says the recall of the pilchards could be a threat to jobs.

This comes after the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications ordered the removal of certain brands of tinned pilchards from the shelves.

Consumers who recently bought 400-gram tins of pilchards in tomato and chilli sauce manufactured by West Point Processors were told to return them.

The Education Department has also suspended the use of pilchards at schools.

It’s temporarily removed it from the National School Nutrition Menu.

The union said in a statement it would like to encourage fish processors to sort the issue out with urgency.

FAWU’s Zolani Mbanjwa said around 9,000 employees are impacted by the recall.

“It’s going to have a negative impact on the job security of our members,” said Mbanjwa.

“My worry is that the fishing industry itself is in a crisis. This thing now of the canning deficiency… which is also going to have a negative impact to our members.

“I’m saying this because I went to West Point Processors to have a talk with the employees.

“They are also concerned because they can see it’s going to affect the whole industry.”

What is the State of Online Gambling in Africa?

Online gambling is a relatively small industry in Africa compared to Europe and North America. But it’s a sector on the rise thanks to changing laws and increasing access to stable Internet connections throughout the continent. So far, these are the countries that allow online casinos.

Angola

The seventh-largest country in Africa hosts a handful of land-based casinos but does not license remote gambling platforms. The country’s lawmakers attempted to legalize the sector in 2016, and their plans are still underway.

That being said, Angola allows its citizens to play casino games at foreign casinos, at least before it introduces new laws. When that happens, the country might allow all gambling sites to acquire a local license before targeting Angolans.

Benin

Although a small country, Benin has a thriving land-based casino industry. The state doesn’t restrict online gambling, meaning its citizens can use offshore casinos at will. Of course, it also means Benin doesn’t allow online casinos to set shop within its borders as of yet.

Botswana

Benin and Angola might not have clear laws about online gambling. But Botswana categorically permits gambling websites to operate within its borders. However, they must acquire a license from the government before they advertise to Botswana’s citizens.

The land-locked country first introduced an online gambling law in 2012. It amended the Act in 2016, and since then, it’s been reaping the benefits of a legal iGaming sector.

Unfortunately, not many international gaming brands have acquired permits to operate in Botswana. But considering the country doesn’t prosecute its citizens for using offshore casinos, these websites welcome Botswana’s players with warm hands.

Cameroon

Coffee, cocoa, oilseeds and soon online casinos could be all major exports from Cameroon. But that’s only if the government’s plans to legalize online go ahead. Local lawmakers regularly cite corruption as a major challenge for regulating the sector.

There’s also a concern that land-based casinos in the country help corrupt individuals launder money. And considering the potential tax revenues in question, the West African country might want to legalize online casinos sooner rather than later.

The central African Republic

For a country that’s perennially plagued by civil wars, rampant poverty and human rights violations, few casinos would want to operate in CAR. And sure enough, there are no traces of a thriving gambling sector in the Central African nation.

With the Central African Republic’s government being dysfunctional, most locals can gamble at foreign casinos freely. Unfortunately, most of the best-rated online casinos tend to ban players from CAR to access casino games.

One explanation could be that online casinos don’t want corrupt officials to launder money on their websites. Again, international regulators like the UKGC prohibit casinos from servicing people from countries with hostile governments.

South Africa

The continent’s second-largest economy has a long history with gambling that dates back to 1673. Over the years, however, the industry has been heavily restricted, with the government only legalizing land-based casinos.

That doesn’t mean you can’t find online casinos for South Africans, though. In fact, some of Africa’s most well-known gambling sites in the world are based in the country. And that comes with its fair share of benefits.

For example, South African casino players have access to bonuses from a wide range of gambling sites. They can also deposit and withdraw money to their local banks. And in some cases, they can access some of the casinos using their native languages.

“Since online casinos still fall in a somewhat grey area as far as South African gambling legislation is concerned, things could change when online gambling legislation is finalised. While it is likely that the South African government will want to legalise online and mobile casino gambling in order to receive the tax and licensing revenue that it can generate, the country may choose to offer a limited number of government-run online casinos rather than allow the current choice of international online casinos that are available. There is also the chance that operators may be able to apply for an online casino license in the future.” – OnlineCasinoSouthAfrica.net.

DRC Congo

C.A.R. ‘s southern neighbours have a functional government and an established gambling sector. It includes a handful of land-based casinos and a national lottery program. The country’s gambling laws make it easy to obtain a license. But they are not progressive enough to recognize the iGaming industry.

That means online casino operators can’t acquire licenses or get regulated by the Congo government. However, Congolese citizens can create accounts and play at offshore gambling sites without getting into trouble with their government.

Ethiopia

Although gambling is legal in Ethiopia, no casino has been successful in the East African nation. First off, the government runs the only lottery department in the country. Worse, its laws are so strict that few casinos have applied for licenses.

There’s also the issue of customers. Most of the casinos that have opened and closed down in Ethiopia in the past several years decried lack of players as a reason for shutting down. Fortunately, Ethiopians that want to access casino games can use offshore establishments.

Ghana

Ghana is known for its fast Internet speeds, excellent business environment and a growing middle class. Against that backdrop, it’s not surprising the local government supports nearly all forms of gambling. From land-based to online casinos—Ghanaians have access to all types of gambling.

Kenya

Like Ghana, Kenya also permits both land-based and online casinos. It also boasts one of the most established sports betting sectors in Africa. As such, Kenyans can legally bet and play slots or poker at a wide range of iGaming websites. Of course, that includes both local and international casinos.

Nigeria

Although Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy, it doesn’t come close to South Africa in terms of gambling revenues recorded annually. Precisely, Nigeria collects $40 million against South Africa’s $1.6 billion.

That being said, Nigeria has much stricter laws than its counterparts. The West African country only allows card games of skill and backgammon in its casinos. What’s more, it only has three licensed casinos.

Zimbabwe

Despite its decades-long political and financial woes, Zimbabwe has always supported the gambling industry. The country first introduced a gambling act in 2000, then allowing land-based casinos and betting shops.

After a growing concern of problem gamblers, Zimbabwe stopped issuing new gambling licenses in 2015 temporarily. Its ban didn’t include online casinos, notably because it does not license nor regulate the industry.
