PSC calls on government to pay suppliers

The Public Service Commission (PSC) is naming and shaming government departments that don’t pay suppliers on time.

Companies are owed billions of rands but, the PSC can only make recommendations.

It’s up to ministers and directors-general of various departments to act.

The Water and Sanitation Department is one of the main culprits breaking the law when it comes to non-payment of businesses.

It owes suppliers nearly R900-million.

Public Service Commissioner Michael Seloane said non-payment is misconduct.

“Once it’s misconduct, you’re subjected to [a] disciplinary hearing in terms of chapter 10 of PFMA. If found guilty that money will have to be paid and you can be sanctioned.”

Suppliers blame corruption, incompetence and a lack of accountability for non-payment.

The national government can take disciplinary action against those responsible for non-payment.
