Principal Laboratory Technician

The Faculty of Military Science, Saldanha Campus (Military Academy), is a satellite campus of Stellenbosch University presenting contextualized tertiary educational programmes exclusively for members of the Department of Defence.
Duties:
The management and administration of the School of Science and Technology laboratory.
Compiling a budget for acquisition of apparatus;
Liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements, and work plans.
Acquisition of laboratory equipment.
Filling in the required documentation for the acquisition of laboratory equipment;
Following the processing of documentation;
Acquiring the apparatus from the supplier.
Manufacturing of purpose-built apparatus.
Designing apparatus in conjunction with lecturers;
Acquiring materials for the manufacturing of the apparatus;
Manufacturing of apparatus.
Laboratory facilities integrity
Reporting deficiencies with regard to the laboratory building and equipment;
Reporting laboratory OHS deficiencies;
Reporting laboratory cleaning needs.
Calibration of equipment.
Conducting experiments under defined conditions to verify/reject various types of hypotheses using refined scientific methods.
Support on research projects (lab test and analysis of fieldwork);
Assisting student poster projects.
Unpacking and storing of apparatus.

Candidate Requirements
Job Requirements:
At least a Bsc Hons (Physics) degree or equivalent qualification with three to five years’
working experience to enable the design of experiments and demonstrations over a wide range of technological fields;
Proven experience as a Lab Technician or relevant post;
Practically inclined and handy with hand tools and power tools in order to build new apparatus and to take equipment apart for maintenance and reassembly;
Computer literacy; problem-solving skills; verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal skills; negotiation skills; people and diversity management skills; strategic and analytical skills; sound financial management skills; report writing skills; presentation skills; research skills and project management skills;
Teamwork skills and patience;
Knowledge of military technology;
Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety;
Flexible in order to work with and provide support for a number of people
Recommendation:
Msc (Physics) degree or equivalent qualification;
Excellent scientific and technical knowledge and good programming skills;
Knowledge of Radiation Safety.
