Police action slammed after clashes with refugees

Police have been heavily criticized for the way they carried out their mandate on Wednesday.

A video has gone viral of a baby crying after she was pulled away from her mother by police.

The incident which took place during the forced removal of refugees from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) offices in Cape Town has caused outrage on social media.

Many are questioning the role of police in public protests.

Refugees who were removed from the United Nations high commission for refugee centre offices say they were victimized by the police.

Community leader Jean-Pierre Balous said he was targeted by police.

“Yesterday we were beaten to death, especially like me. I was targeted the police shot me five times. The police hit me and trumped on me. And they said if you think this is your country, we will show you.”

Police, on the other hand, said action had to be taken, as the refugees had refused to move.

“The group was given time to disperse and unfortunately they couldn’t and as a result, police took action”, said police spokesperson Novela Potelwa.

Claims that seven children were missing and that two people had died during the clashes have been refuted.

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees says it can only assist people who want to be repatriated to their countries of birth.
