Retired Constitutional Court Justice Edwin Cameron has been appointed Inspecting Judge of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services, from January next year. Cameron will be ensuring prisoners are treated humanely.
He hung up his robes in August. Cameron is also known for spearheading the fight against Aids denial.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended current Inspecting Judge, Justice Johann van der Westhuizen’s tenure until the end of December.
The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services monitors prisons around the country. It reports on the treatment of inmates and the conditions they live in.

A group of editors and journalists wanted the EFF and its leaders to be compelled to speak and act against anti-media rhetoric and alleged intimidation of journalists.
The Economic Freedom Fighters and its leader Julius Malema have won their defence of a case brought against by the SA National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) and journalists Ranjeni Munusamy, Pauli Van Wyk, Adriaan Basson, Max Du Preez and Barry Bateman. Read more
