Pravin Gordhan to release Special Paper on Eskom

Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan is expected to release a Special Paper on Eskom on Tuesday. The document will detail a comprehensive road-map for the struggling state-owned entity.

At the same time, the Standing Committee on Appropriations will be briefed by Eskom’s Executive Board.

Last week the Special Appropriations Bill was passed in Parliament. The bill will give Eskom a R59-billion bailout once approved by the National Council of Provinces.

Although Eskom has not implemented load shedding for over a week, the power utility warns the system remains vulnerable and any unexpected shift may result in load-shedding at short notice.

In other news – Minister Gwede Mantashe – I did not bribe anybody

According to a statement by Mantashe’s ministry, he didn’t bribe anybody and neither were the claims of bribery of journalists confirmed by the newspaper. The DA has asked parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests to probe conduct relating to Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe and claims that he bribed two journalists.

The threats came after recent media reports that Mantashe had acknowledged to the Sunday World newspaper that he paid two of its journalists R70,000 to make a story about his personal life “disappear”. However, in a statement late on Monday, Mantashe’s ministry said: “Mr Mantashe is clear that none of the sort occurred. Further, attested to by the newspaper, there was no verification of these allegations prior to the publication of the story. Read more
