COVID: 7 million vaccine jabs and counting

Over 7-million people countrywide have received at least one dose of either the Pfizer or the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

A consignment of over five million doses is due to arrive in the next few days as part of the Covax donation by the US.

Despite proof that vaccines save lives, some people remain opposed to being jabbed.

Professor Shabir Madhi from Wits University says vaccination of people with co-morbidities should be prioritized.

Constitutional Court rules against Qwelane in hate speech case

A victory for human rights, particularly the LGBT-Plus community.

The long-awaited Constitutional Court judgment has been handed down on the matter involving the late journalist Jon Qwelane and the SA Human Rights Commission.

In 2008, Qwelane wrote a homophobic article in the Sunday Sun that received hundreds of complaints.

The judgment has reaffirmed the rights of certain groups of people who have been victims of hate speech and unfair discrimination.

Legal expert Rupert Candy said: “It’s a seminal day for victims of hate speech and unfair discrimination. The Qwelane judgment has been going on for close to 13 years. The matter was handed down today [Friday] by the Constitutional Court, it did uphold the declaration of constitutional invalidity by the SCA however, it was just in respect of a specific portion of the hate speech provision of the Equality Act, which dealt with hurtfulness. The other grounds, in respect of, whether speech is harmful and promotes or propogates hatred has been left as is.

“As it stands, at the moment, it is a victory for defenders of the rights of people to human dignity.”

SA unrest: Parliamentary inquiry hits a snag

Parliament’s planned inquiry into the recent unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng has hit a snag.

It’s emerged the committees tasked with the job don’t have the legal prescripts to proceed.

The security cluster committees of both the houses of Parliament were due to be briefed by ministers on Friday and come up with terms of reference for the inquiry.

Last week, House Chairperson Cedric Frolick instructed the committees to initiate a joint probe and report back to the National Assembly within two weeks.

But Parliament’s legal team pointed out according to house rules, the said committees can’t legally initiate a probe without a resolution from both houses.

It’s been recommended while Parliament is still in recess, the Speaker consider the establishment of an ad hoc committee, instead.

Western Cape taxi violence: ANC and alliance partners trying to broker peace

Could more players in the field lead to peace between warring taxi factions in Cape Town?

The ANC and its alliance partners in the Western Cape believe so.

They are negotiating with taxi associations to find a lasting peace agreement.

More than 20 people have been killed in taxi-related shootings this month.

The contentious Bellville to Mbekweni taxi route – at the heart of the unrest – has been closed down for a period of two months.

Meanwhile, Cosatu says workers can’t be dismissed for missing work due to the taxi unrest and it will assist those who want to dispute a dismissal.
