Commissioner Sitole was unavailable in lead up to Zuma incarceration, says Bheki Cele

Police Minister Bheki Cele says National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole was unavailable in the lead up to former president Jacob Zuma’s incarceration.

This is despite all hands being required on deck.

Cele was on the stand at the Human Rights Commission hearings into the July unrest, which resulted in the deaths of more than 300 people dead.

Cele says he foresaw the problems. He says he went to Nkandla to try and defuse the situation.

Cele said it took the whole day for former President Jacob Zuma to hand himself over to start serving his jail term.
