Prepare for hospital surge as COVID-19 cases rise – expert

With the number of daily COVID-19 cases rising rapidly, Professor Ian Sanne says a surge in hospital admissions must be prepared for.

Sanne says that 75 to 80% of hospitalizations are unvaccinated people, and there’s a large number of people who might still become severely ill.

Meanwhile, Tshwane is the global epicentre of the new Omicron variant, according to the South African Medical Research Council.

It says there’s a rapid increase in hospital admissions and infections in the metro.

The National Institute for Communicable Disease (NICD) reported 16,366 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
