Chaos in council meeting as members beat each other (PHOTOS)

Yet another council meeting in SunLand has ended in alleged public servants beating each other.

The free-for-all brawl at a meeting in the uThukela District in the KZN Midlands will go to court.

This means that the Alfred Duma Municipality in Ladysmith remains one of the municipalities that has not elected its office bearers in the province, because they will not meet the deadline of the inauguration of the office bearers.

The ANC has approached the Pietermarizburg High Court, disputing the way the IFP councillors conducted themselves through the process of the secret ballot voting.

The chaos erupted during the inaugural meeting on Monday 22 November, where different political parties were refusing to accept the newly elected IFP speaker.

They claimed the process was not conducted in the correct way as the IFP councillors were announcing who they were voting for. The dispute ended with fists flying in the room. It’s alleged that president of the National People’s Ambassadors, Nathi Mthethwa seconded the dispute launched by the ANC councillors, but he had to retreat as the IFP attacked him.

Mthethwa said he was beaten by an IFP councillor because he was also disputing the way the secret ballot was conducted.

“My sin was to debate the disputed matter as it was clear that what they did was wrong. Because the ANC is planning to approach the court, I did not open a case against them.”

ANC councillor Andile Mchunu said they then approached the court. “The Pietermarizburg High Court gave a verdict that no inaugural process should continue and no council meetings should sit before 14 December, when they will give judgment. Cogta will also decide whether there will be a by-election. They will also wait for the court decision.
