Parents urged not to let their guard down this festive season

NGOs dealing with missing children say this busy season provides the perfect distraction for criminals to pounce.

Organisations like the Pink Ladies Organisation for Missing Children and Missing Children SA say this time of the year is usually one of their busiest.

They’re warning parents not to let their guard down. We do see an increase of children going missing over the festive season and over the holiday periods in general,” said Bianca van Aswegen from Missing Children SA.

“We do see a lot of children actually get lost, wandering off by themselves. Missing Children SA does add however, they could see fewer people on beaches and in malls than in previous years due to COVID-19.

But for some parents, concerns over their children going missing while out and about are still heightened.

Marley Nyatso said the pandemic has led her and her husband to find different ways of keeping children occupied away, safely away from crowds like going for walks in nature, gardening and baking together at home.

I have a lot of anxiety these days about going to the mall with my kids. Because imagine three kids in a mall, they don’t want me to hold their hands,” Nyatso said.

“The youngest one thinks he’s Spider-Man, so he doesn’t walk normally. He usually jumps around and stuff, so I always have that anxiety that he’ll be four steps in front of me and somebody will just pick him up and run.
