Cape Town Checkers stores closed over COVID-19 infections

At least five Checkers stores in Cape Town have been closed after workers tested positive for COVID-19. At a Table View store, several employees have been infected. Some are now in quarantine at a hotel, while others have stopped going to work.

One employee, who has asked to remain anonymous said no one has communicated with them from the company. Another employee at the same outlet said screening was organised, but that was the last time workers received any communication from management about COVID-19.

She asserted that some employees were called to return to work the following day. A 30-year-old woman and 51-year-old woman working at the Table View Checkers tested positive for COVID-19 and have since passed away. An employee who works at the same store is counting herself lucky she has tested negative.

eNCA’s attempts to comment from the store about the allegations against it were unsuccessful. In a statement, Table View Checkers would only say that it suspended operations on 14 April and reopened on 16 April following consultations with the Health Department.
