Gauteng’s West Rand has become a new COVID-19 hotspot. Infections in the mining industry there are rising. Over 200 workers at Anglo Gold Ashanti and Sibanye Stillwater’s mines have tested positive for coronavirus.
Gauteng Premier David Makhura met with mine bosses in Carletonville to assess compliance with regulations. With a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases on Gauteng’s West Rand, the focus is shifting to the mines.
“From the provincial point of view, the West Rand is going to be a hotspot.
We will direct all the necessary provincial support and also ask for national support to help ensure we contain the spread of the virus, particularly the mines,” said Makhura. On Sunday, Anglo Gold Ashanti suspended its operations after 196 workers tested positive for COVID-19.

Officials say another five cases have also been reported at Sibanye Gold’s Mines. Government says it will now be cracking the whip on compliance with regulations Meanwhile, Anglo Gold Ashanti has donated its old hospital to the provincial government to be used as a designated COVID-19 facility. The Gauteng government says the hospital, which has close to 200 beds, will open its doors by the end of next month.
