But, the national backlog of test results is around 80,000. The department also released data on the age groups of the infected. Just over 28 per cent of those who tested positive are between the ages of 30 and 40. But, only 5.7 percent of deaths are from this age group.

Although more than 26 percent of those who died were between 60 and 70 years old, they make up only around 6 percent of those who tested positive. More than 70 percent of deaths are people between 50 and 80 years old. Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said in a statement that an employee of the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) was one of the fatalities.

“We are deeply saddened by this news and wish to send words of comfort to her family and thank them for having allowed their loved one to serve the country during this difficult time,” the statement read. We also take this opportunity to encourage other NHLS employees. We understand that this tragedy will certainly test you.

“But we wish to assure you of our commitment to continue taking the necessary measures to protect you while you perform your duties by providing the PPE required and ensuring that your workplace protocols observe all the safety measures to mitigate the risk of our frontline employees getting infected. The recoveries to date are 14,370, which translates to a recovery rate of 52,4 percent. The Western Cape still remains the epicentre with 17,754 cases and 406 deaths.
