Hours have been extended at some licencing departments across Gauteng. This is to deal with the backlog in renewing driver’s licences.
Thousands of motorists in Gauteng are driving without valid licenses and many because of a licensing department backlog, this was exacerbated by the lockdown
About 30,000 people haven’t been able to renew their licences but the provincial department says it has a plan in place.
“Firstly, you would notice they are working on weekends now. It’s across the province,” said Gauteng Transport spokesperson, Theo Nkonki.
“We are also starting from 16 October, we will dedicate certain days to dealing with the backlog. With regards to the slots, driving schools would hoard the slots. We have now made a slot for each ID number.
The DA in the province says more needs to be done to deal with the backlog. Motorists with expired drivers’ licenses have until the end of January to renew.
