Level 1 lockdown – Taverns ignore the rules, people spotted k!ssing and hugging

Boozers partied like there was no coronavirus. And a number of taverns and shebeens were packed over the weekend.

But there were no masks and social distancing, with some people even hugging, kissing, and sharing booze and cigarettes.

The SunTeam visited a few taverns around Soweto and Tembisa in Ekurhuleni, where Covid-19 safety regulations were completely disregarded.

There was no one at the doors to screen or sanitize customers, and some people walked into the taverns without masks.

Under alert level 1, which came into effect last week, the government announced fewer restrictions and warned that the virus was still very much around us.

According to reports, experts have warned of a possible spike in new infections due to social gatherings.

Liquor stores are allowed to trade from 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays, and on-premises drinking spots can operate between 9 am and midnight when the curfew kicks in.

A tavern owner told Daily Sun he was aware that safety measures were not in place in his tavern, but blamed customers and fellow tavern owners.

He said: “I tried turning away customers without masks, but they will go to another tavern and be allowed entry. I realized that this was going to cost me money when I’m still trying to recover from the alcohol ban.

“It is useless to observe lockdown laws when your competitors are not following them because your customers move to them.

“I disinfect my tavern every morning before I open. I also put a sanitiser at the door, but it often disappears because some customers steal it,” he said.

At the time of going to print, police had not responded to an inquiry relating to tavern and shebeen traders who were bust breaking lockdown rules.

If we have established anything is that one way to get DJ Zinhle to actually come out on social media and create a raucous is to try and say something about her daughter or her parenting skills.
