President Cyril Ramaphosa says the criminal justice system failed Precious Ramabulana. The president says the Limpopo student’s alleged killer had a pending rape case against him. The 21-year-old was found dead in her room a week ago after being stabbed 52 times.
On Sunday, Ramaphosa held a private meeting with the family of Precious Ramabulana at their house outside Makhado, in Limpopo. He said her alleged killer had had a brush with the law before he brutally killed Ramabulana.
Ramaphosa said the young woman’s promising future was cut short when she was slaughtered like an animal.
He said the government will introduce tougher sentences for those found guilty of committing crimes against women and children. Some community members in Makhado have called for the death penalty to be reinstated, to serve as a deterrent to those committing gender-based violence.
