Police minister Bheki Cele has urged the Lavender Hill community to help police root out gang violence. Cele attended the funeral of 5-year-old Valentino Grootetjie who was shot and killed by suspected gang members in his backyard just a few days before Christmas.
“The call is on the parents to say take care of your kids, don’t allow them to be pulled and recruited by ugly-hearted people who sell drugs to them and make them drug addicts,” Cele said.
Two suspects, who were arrested two days after the shooting, have appeared in court. They’re being detained until their next appearance in January.
