Caring Cops help a homeless woman give birth – Pictures

Their duty is to keep law and order – but they also do what they have to do to save lives. On Christmas Day, four Metro cops in Joburg went beyond the call of duty when they helped a homeless mum give birth.

JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla told Daily Sun the officers going to Braamfontein after a parade were stopped by a group of homeless people. They told them a homeless woman was giving birth on the pavement at the corner of Rissik and De Villiers streets in the CBD.

Officers Sibusiso Lembede, Sibongiseni Dlame, Mduzuzi Ncongwane, and Sydney Betha rushed to assist the woman and her baby.

It was too late to wait for an ambulance, so the officers did the job themselves.

“The baby was delivered on the pavement,” said Fihla.

Officers called an ambulance after the child was delivered but after two hours, the baby was turning pale so they took the mum and the baby to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

Officer Ncongwane said the experience was traumatic for him at first but it worked out fine in the end.

Officer Lembede told Daily Sun: “This shows there are cops who go out of their way to help people.

“I’m proud of my team. None of them hesitated to help.”
