Additional COVID-19 vaccine doses expected

President Cyril Ramaphosa said 500,000 more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are expected in the country in the coming weeks.

This is in addition to the one million doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine that arrived from the Serum Institute of India on Monday. Ramaphosa said the government is sourcing vaccines from a number of suppliers.

“The arrival of these vaccines contains the promise that we can turn the tide on this disease,” he added.

He said government will use an Electronic Vaccine Data System in the rollout. It will allow it to monitor distribution and effectiveness.

“The department of health has developed an Electronic Vaccine Data System to streamline the vaccine registration and rollout process,” Ramaphosa said. This will allow us to capture all relevant data which is associated with the administration of the vaccine.

The president said vaccines would be available to all adults living in South Africa, regardless of citizenship, but stressed that “nobody will be forced” to take it.

“It is in the best interest of all that as many of us receive the vaccine,” Ramaphosa said. But I want to be clear: Nobody will be forced to take this vaccine.

“Nobody will be forbidden from travelling to wherever they want to travel to or taking part in any public activity if they have not been vaccinated.

“Nobody will be given this vaccine against their will, nor will the vaccine be administered in secret or in some dark corners.
