Democratic Alliance calls for Parliamentary debate on COVID-19 corruption

The Democratic Alliance has called for action against corruption, including an emergency Parliamentary debate.

The DA’s interim leader John Steenhuisen called for a snap debate into COVID-19 related corruption.

“The president promised the nation in March, in no uncertain terms, that he would ensure that no COVID money was misappropriated through corruption and maladministration.
“We now sit, in August, and we have had millions upon millions of rands that have been channelled through corrupt activities into the pockets of connected individuals,” Steenhuisen said.

Steenhuisen said he wants the president to take definitive action against corruption and state when individuals implicated in corrupt activities will be prosecuted.

The opposition leader said the president did not listen to the suggestion from the DA at the beginning of the national lockdown that an inspector-general of COVID funding be appointed to provide oversight for COVID-19 funding.

Steenhuisen said better funding is needed for the National Prosecuting Authority to prosecute corrupt officials.
