Concerns mount over Eastern Cape COVID-19 infections

Nearly 80 per cent of confirmed COVID-19 cases are from the Western and Eastern Cape and 90 per cent of deaths have been reported in those provinces. It will now focus attention on the province to limit the escalation of infections. 37 more COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, with 29 in the Western Cape, seven in the Eastern Cape and one from KZN. Nurses’ unions said shortages of protective gear are putting Eastern Cape health workers at risk of contracting COVID-19.

The Eastern Cape Health Department’s Dr Thobile Mbengashe said what they’re experiencing is severe community anxiety. He said healthcare workers should follow all the protocols put in place to safeguard them, including the use of PPE and adequate hygiene procedures. Residents in the Eastern Cape have been affected by water shortages, raising concerns about hygiene.
