SA lockdown: Strandfontein residents wants homeless moved

Legal action is being taken against the City of Cape Town after it moved hundreds of homeless people off the streets and accommodated them at the Strandfontein Sports Complex. In its urgent High Court application, the residents of Strandfontein want the shelter for the homeless to be shut down, saying it poses a health risk to everyone. The City of Cape Town moved about 1,500 homeless people to a site in Strandfontein to comply with Disaster Management Act regulations.

But the Strandfontein Social and Economic Development Forum and the Ratepayers’ Association say the City’s move was unlawful. We are not going to court just for the sake of going. We are going to court because there is a genuine threat to our health and the health of the community. We have a lot of old people living in our area. Especially in the area of the sportsfield,” said the association’s Mandy van Willingh.

Van Willingh said the Strandfontein community was not consulted by the City of Cape Town about establishing the COVID-19 temporary shelter for the homeless there. The city has until Tuesday to file answering papers and the matter is expected to be heard on Thursday. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday
