Police in Ekurhuleni are investigating a possible case of theft in relation to the fuel pipeline explosion in Alberton on Tuesday. Two fires on Transnet’s pipeline from Durban to Johannesburg kept firefighters busy for most of the day.
Residents in Alberton who were evacuated after the explosion, have returned. The fire saw about 40 homes temporarily evacuated as a safety precaution.
Emergency services managed to douse the flames without any injuries or fatalities and are continuing with the cleanup.
Transnet — which owns the fuel pipeline — says it’s experienced an unprecedented spate of theft on its pipelines over the past few months.
The matter is now with local authorities for investigation.
