Just one unvaccinated person poses a risk to the entire globe. WHO Science Council Member, Salim Abdool Karim, says vaccinations should be made mandatory.
“When you take that the original virus that jumped from bats and eventually came into humans, it probably just came into one person and that one person has caused all the mayhem we’ve seen today when that person didn’t even know they caused it,” Karim said.
“And similarly each of the variants has probably been caused by just one or two people at most and then it spreads, so even one unvaccinated person poses that risk to the whole world.
“If that’s the case, and it’s a very strong case, then it can’t be simply a matter of personal choice. It has to be that for public good that there is a vaccine mandate. That vaccines need to be a mandate that’s required,” he said.
But he says those who have legitimate reasons can be left out under strict conditions.
“Now when it’s required there may be certain individuals that can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons or have strong religious or other reasons why they will not be vaccinated, so we have to allow for those individuals.
“They need to make submissions and if they’re found to have legitimate reasons then they are not vaccinated. In which case they will then have to be tested at least once a week in order to ensure that they’re not putting everyone else at risk, so it’s a balancing act.”
