Cash-in-transit heist disaster: Driver shot in the face as robbers hit cash van

Three cash vanguards including a driver, aged 30 – 45, escaped death from a hail of bullets. This comes after a gang of unknown gunmen, driving a white Ford Ranger bakkie, forced the van to stop on the road.

The incident happened in Newscom Village near Baghdad outside KaBokweni, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday, 4 August at about 4.30 pm.

Motorists and bystanders had to duck and dive the flying bullets from the gunmen, who were attacking the cash vehicle coming from Puma filling station heading to collect cash at Kabokweni Complex.

Said one of the motorists: “We spotted a speeding white double cab Ford Ranger full of gunmen on the chase of the cash truck at Newscom. They riddled the truck with bullets, wanting to make it stop. But the truck was speeding so fast they shot its wheels, deflating them and making it stop instantly. The gang jumped out of the bakkie and quickly surrounded the cash truck as they forced the driver and his two assistants out”.

The motorist said the gunmen forced the men to lie on the ground as they disarmed them before blowing up the truck, looting an undisclosed amount of cash and running away.

“One of the guards had severe injuries and was bleeding on the ground.”

Colonel Brenda Muridili confirmed a security vehicle was travelling between KaNyamazane and KaBokweni when it was shot at by unknown suspects in a white Ford Ranger bakkie.

“The armoured vehicle was forced to a standstill. The driver and two crew members were forced out of the armoured vehicle. The suspects allegedly used explosives to gain access to the armoured vehicle and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken. The 46-year-old driver of the armoured vehicle was shot in the face and arm before he was taken to the hospital.”

Muridili appealed to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to call CrimeStop at 08600 10111 or send tip-offs on the MySAPS app.
