Grades 12 and 7 are expected to return to school on June 1

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has announced that pupils in Grades 12 and 7 are expected to return to school on June 1. The minister stressed that this was a provisonal plan, and dependend on all the correct protocols being put in place to ensure the safety of pupils and staff.

“When we say Grade 7s have to come, they will have the whole school to themselves and they will only face the other grades when the time comes for those to return to school,” Motshekga said. She did not specify when the next group of learners will be allowed to return to school. Senior education officials will return to work on May 4 to start putting in place all the necessary interventions that will allow teachers to return to school from May 18, Motshekga said.

The proposed changes to the school calendar will be gazetted once all consulations have taken place. The minister stressed that the resumption of lessons for the 12.4 million pupils enrolled at schools across the country will be done on a phased basis, based on scientific considerations.

“As a sector, since we closed schools at the end of March we have had almost 50 consultations with stakeholders,” Motshekga said. “In all these consultations, the principle of opening schools at the right time was accepted. Once all the conditions were met.”

Among the conditions Motshekga mentioned was the provision of face masks for all educators and pupils.

Due to the national lockdown, pupils have not been able to do mid-year examination, and these will now be combined with the year-end exams. This includes candidates who would have re-written senior certificate subjects in June.

“The examinations which was supposed to start in May will be merged with the November exams,” Motshekga said. She stressed that the department has developed guidelines for dealing with Covid-19 in schools, based on input received from the national health department.

The Standard Operating Procedures will provide guidelines for all administrators on the steps to be undertaken in order to prevent the spread, and manage cases of Covid-19, including:

Angie Motshekga
Role of childcare facilities and schools in responding to Covid-19;
Management of Covid-19 cases in a childcare facility or school;
Guidelines for Heads of Departments and Supervisors on Covid-19 – procedures regarding employees;
Management and monitoring of absenteeism is schools;
Management of learner transport measures;
Closure of a unit / component / office / department, if an employee tested positive for COVID-19; and
How to clean educational establishments, where there were learners, staff members, or others, with suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19.
The department’s plans for social distancing include:
Physical distancing in classrooms, includes not more than 2 learners sharing desks;
No hugging or handshaking;
Direct contact must be avoided;
Cloth masks to be worn by learners and teachers at all times;
Sports matches, choral practices and festivals, eisteddfods are not permitted; and e xtra classes should be arranged in small groups that maintain social distancing, Motshekga said.

Measures pertaining to infrastructure and furniture:
Sanitize classrooms prior to the start of school day;
sanitize hands on entering of classrooms;
Limit movement of learners between classes; and
No clustering of desks in classrooms.
Transport
Working with the Department of Transport to ensure that buses are sanitized prior to start of all trips;
Everybody to sanitize hands on entering of the buses;
The distance between learners in the buses must be managed; and
The wearing of masks throughout the school day, starting before boarding transport, is compulsory.
Meanwhile the South African Broadcasting Corporation announced on Thursday that is launching a new channel which will carry public service content from the Department of Education.
The public broadcaster said the addition of SABC Education to its existing portfolio of channels would benefit pupils throughout the country via digital television, online video-sharing platform YouTube and other platforms, providing them with more flexibility in accessing educational content.

“However, the viability and success of the ‘SABC Education campaign’ is dependent on sponsorships to enable (this) vital educational material to be made available to all pupils,” the SABC said.

“This is only possible if funding is made available to broadcast this material on SABC 1 and 2, the platforms with the best national reach. The SABC can provide 12 hours per day over these two channels.

Sports Presenter Loyiso Sitsheke has died

Popular Umhlobo Wenene FM presenter Loyiso Sitsheke touched many lives and his death on Wednesday has robbed three friends of a relationship that extended far beyond the walls of the numerous broadcast studios they have shared over the years. The 54-year-old Sitsheke’s sudden death just 24 hours after doing his show sent shock waves around the country and his family, friends, colleagues and listeners are struggling to deal with his loss.

Veteran radio and TV presenter Jeff Moloi, Umhlobo Wenene FM and TV presenter Mluleki Ntsabo, and SAFM anchor Thabiso Mosia have known Sitsheke for many years and they said this is a devastating blow they cannot come to terms with.

Moloi’s relationship with Sitsheke goes back over two decades and he said it was the man he calls a brother who gave him his big break in radio at Unitra Community Radio (UCR) in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape in 1996. He interviewed me at UCR and there was something he liked about me,” he said.

“We found out that we listened to the same people, the same stations …… Radio Xhosa, Capital Radio 604 and many others. We found out that we had the same influences and he just put me under his wing.”

Moloi later moved to Durban to join East Coast Radio while Sitsheke’s career path took him to Johannesburg. The two would reunite at eTV in Johannesburg and shared a house for six years “I do not remember a single day fighting with him,” he said.

“We never had any of the tension that usually comes with people sharing their space. He moved out when I was starting a new family and understood that I had a new family. We parted ways very well.

“I have lost a brother. Lloyd is my brother, he is my brother……….,” said an emotional Moloi. Ntsabo also struggled to come to terms with the loss of a man he’s shared a studio with for many years and said he would be missed. We have lost a friend, a colleague and most of all, a family Ta Mni,” said a devastated Ntsabo.

 Loyiso Sitsheke

Every time I talk about him, I just…….. it’s tough, it’s tough….. I will miss him. He was such a peaceful man, he hated tension and didn’t like fights. He never held grunge. Ntsabo said Sitsheke was unbelievably meticulous during his preparations for his show and his attention to detail was impressive.

Mosia met Sitsheke 12 years ago when they were together at eTV and have been close friends since. He even produced Sitsheke’s radio show on Umhlobo Wenene for a period of time after he had left eTV to join the SABC.

As listeners reminisced about the much loved and humble presenter this week, some recalled an emotional interview that Sitsheke did on his show a couple of years ago with Mosia and his legendary broadcaster father Stan. Mosia had never shared the airwaves with his legendary father and Sitsheke decided to make it happen.

“The only time I have ever been on air with my dad was on Ta Lloyd’s show,” the younger Mosia. He called under the pretence that he wanted me to analyse some PSL matches on his show“The next thing I know he brought my father on the line and the listeners started alling.

“It was very emotional because it was the first time………. I grew up with my dad working at Umhlobo Wenene and they (the station) were also celebrating me after one of the awards I won at SAFM. It just shows what kind of a person he was. Sitsheke was born in Qumbu in the Eastern Cape and the details of his funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later stage. Details on his memorial service and funeral will be provided soon.

Professor Salim Abdool Karim says the easing lockdown regulations and the reopening schools are inevitable. He says normal life must be allowed to continue amid the coronavirus, as the virus is expected to be around for a while. Professor Karim chairs the government’s advisory committee on coronavirus.

“For as long as we do not have immunity and we do not have a vaccine, we are going to have to live with this virus. This virus is going to pose a threat continually, well into next year. Pictures of Real Life VS Acting: How does Uzalo actress Gugu Gumede aka MaMlambo do it

Still, to date, a lot of viewers are amazed by how actress Gugu Gumede who plays MaMlambo or Hlengiwe on popular TV drama series Uzalo, is able to act and completely look the opposite of how she looks in the real world. In the show, she appears like an all grown woman in her late 40s, but in life, she is a sweet, fresh, and young woman who looks absolutely gorgeous.

Gugu Gumede

MbareTimes.com has compiled a few of Gugu’s snaps to reveal how totally different these two characters, MaMlambo, and Gugu Gumede look. The key question here is, how is she able to do it because as far as it looks, it should be so challenging, just the sense of balancing the two.

Gugu Gumede

In real life, the actress looks so hot that she is a type of woman every man would die for. She has a great taste in fashion and you can tell from her social media posts, how she dresses, makeup on-point, and all the praise to her nicely build body.

Gugu Gumede

Unlike when she is acting, all the time she is seen in her grown women gowns, no makeups, and she is really good at portraying a grown-woman behavior. You know what? thumbs up to Hleng-hleng, like she is called by Nkunzi, LOL!

Mzansi reacts to the video of Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams Dancing next to her fancy car

Suspended Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has angered social media users after a video was posted on Twitter on Tuesday night of her dancing gleefully next to what appears to be a lavish new black BMW sedan.

Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams

Sakhile Njoko (@The_Njoko) said that the video was inappropriate. “People are confined to their homes, sick, dying and losing their jobs yet Minister @Stellarated is having a good time. It says she doesn’t care. She’s also publicly saying the sanction @CyrilRamaphosa imposed on her hasn’t affected her. A middle finger!”

In another post, marcel (@marcel_za) wrote: “Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams wants to thank every taxpayer for making her realize her dreams.”
MKMVA spokesperson Carl Niehaus (@niehaus_carl) also had some strong views: “This photo and that video should be looked at together. The long-suffering selfless loyalty of our #ANC members, compared to displays of conspicuous consumption and arrogance of some of our leaders is shameful. The time for self-correction and ending this nonsense is long overdue!”

Ndabeni-Abrahams is currently on two months special leave for contravening the country’s Covid-19 regulations. One of the two months would be unpaid, South Africans were told. While the annus horribilis that is 2020 is only four months old, this is the third time this year that Ndabeni-Abrahams has been a hot topic on South African social media community for all the wrong reasons

Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams

Ndabeni-Abrahams left viewers puzzled when, responding to allegations that she had whisked her husband away on a trip to Switzerland to celebrate their anniversary with taxpayers money, she said in a live television interview that she had taken a trip to Geneva, but not to Switzerland.

“I have never been to Switzerland. My husband has never been to Switzerland. We went to Geneva and New York, of course to do the work I am expected to do,” she confidently opined at the time, before later on clarifying that she had meant France and not Geneva.

Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams

Last month with the country in the infancy of a government-imposed 21 day lockdown, Ndabeni-Abrahams found herself having to put out more fires following an Instagram post by her ANC comrade and friend Mduduzi Manana, a former deputy minister of Higher Education.

Manana posted a picture in which he appeared with Ndabeni-Abrahams and other people enjoying a Sunday lunch. He deleted it after public backlash in which South Africans called for swift action from President Cyril Ramaphosa against Ndabeni-Abrahams for breaking lockdown regulations.

She was placed on special leave by Ramaphosa and forced to apologise to South Africans. She was summoned to appear at the Pretoria district court where she pleaded guilty for contravening lockdown regulations and paid a R1000 fine for her trouble.

No alcohol or cigarettes to be sold under South Africa’s new Level 4 lockdown

Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has confirmed that South Africans will not be allowed to purchase alcohol or cigarettes under the country’s new Level 4 restrictions. In a presentation on Wednesday evening (29 April), Dlamini-Zuma said that the sale and distribution of liquor is not permitted under any circumstances, except in the instances of businesses exporting products.

This is in line with the proposed lockdown plan which was presented on Saturday, as alcohol attracts crowds and leads to misbehaviour, Dlamini-Zuma said. The minister said that a ban on alcohol has also freed up hospital beds.

However, she noted that government has also backtracked on its decision to allow for the sale of cigarettes – and other smoking products such as electronic cigarettes – after it received more than 2,000 complaints from the public and industry stakeholders.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

This is because of the health risks associated with smoking and which could exacerbate the ongoing health crisis, she said. Some of the other lifestyle changes announced by the government include:

Essential goods will continue to be sold, joined by hardware supplies, winter clothing and heating, and other industry-related items;
Certain industries will only be able to open at half capacity;
E-hailing services are able to operate, while public transport is also limited;
No concerts, cinemas or public gatherings will be allowed;
Exercise will be limited, with public gyms remaining closed;
Food delivery will be available, subject to the curfew.
Ban on alcohol has led to big drop in crime

Police Minister Bheki Cele said that the ban of alcohol has resulted in a major drop in crime levels across the country and opened up hospitals to ‘ do what they’re supposed to do.

Speaking in a parliamentary briefing on Wednesday, Cele said most murders can be attributed to alcohol in some way. Most murders are around the alcohol. Rapes, they are around the alcohol. It has been decided alcohol cannot be allowed to be sold under stage four,” he said.

“The unavailability of alcohol has done wonders in the fight against Covid-19. Restrictions on the sale on liquor is expected to persist for much of the lockdown according to the provisional regulations, with a ban on sitdown bars and shebeens expected to last for the duration of the lockdown.

“It’s just that it’s not a great feeling to know that a random group of people decided that I don’t deserve all these things that I worked so hard for. Crime is really the most heartbreaking thing. Imagine working that hard for you to be back to square one,” Zodwa said. When she spoke to TshisaLIVE last Thursday, just after she found out about the house burglary, Zodwa thanked God she and her family weren’t home because she said she believed something bad could have happened to them.

Zodwa Wabantu

“I’m heartbroken that you work so hard only for other people with evil hearts to take everything you’ve worked for. It really hurts. But I am very grateful there was nobody at home. I could have been raped or killed, if I was in the house, but God made sure I wasn’t there.

Since then, Zodwa has made sure that people know that she isn’t “weak” and that she was caught off-guard but that won’t happen again. I had a break-in I’m not weak or paralysed nizo***. I never let my guard down,” she said on Instagram.

In other news – Unathi: I crush on myself, when people say Unathi uyazithanda, my rhetoric is always KAKHULU

I crush on myself, when people say Unathi uyazithanda, my rhetoric is always KAKHULU. The mother of music to my opinion and I’m sure many of you will agree with me. She is showing us or rather teaching us self-love in the above statement. So many times people look down upon themselves and downgrade their thinking which leads to less self-confidence which leads to living a miserable life full of regrets.

Unathi

But what is Unathi saying here? She is saying lets rise lets be more positive. Let’s be happy. You know a lot of people might want to call it pride but to me, l would like to see it as encouragement. If you don’t tell yourself that you are special, you are beautiful, you are wonderful no one will tell you that and you actually believe it. It all starts with you, your inner self. If you start to believe within you then what people say about you might even start to kick in. Read more
