Somizi to Host The Biggest Event of The Year

If there was ever any doubt that Somizi Mhlongo is the absolute boss, his portfolio in the past few months should have cleared it all up. Somizi has been living his best life, then gone straight to booked and busy, and nobody can do it like he does.

The actor just recently announced that he would be hosting the first ever horse racing event in Mzansi. The event is set for the 5th of December, and will feature other big industry names like DJ Lamiez Holworthy, Kabza De Small and Shimza.

He is also a self starter in many other ways. He is the first one to host a food and good vibes tour like the one he has been for the past month or so, called Eat Love Pray with Somizi. According to him, the road show has been a huge success in the country, and he is now looking to take it international, starting with Botswana. He is yet to announce the dates for that, but he confirms that the show is growing and reaching magnitudes of people, and we know the impact will be phenomenal.

Since he returned from the US where he was on his bestiecation, he has had no days off. His schedule has been hectic, but we are sure he is loving the hustle, especially because he is securing the bag in a major way.

Somizi

He is also set to establish himself as a style icon soon. I mean, we have always known he is one, because have you seen his outfit? This time, though, he is actively venturing into the fashion industry. He announced that he would be releasing a shoe collection in collaboration with Bathu shoes, one of the biggest footwear companies in South Africa.
He was also banned from Zimbabwe for his sexuality. But the star keeps bouncing back like nothing ever happened. He found love in Dubai and New York, where he was accepted for who he is, and now he is back home where the love runs deep.

Somizi

We wish Somizi the best, and will be watching and cheering him on in his stellar career. He is going places, and we love to see it.

SAHRC hears KZN govt leaders were nowhere to be found during July unrest

The leader of a shack dwellers movement has told the inquiry probing the July unrest that leaders of the KwaZulu-Natal government were nowhere to be found during the unrest.

S’bu Zikode of Abahlali baseMjondolo said they tried to get hold of them but to no avail.

Zikode testified at the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)’s inquiry sitting in Umhlanga.

He spoke in his capacity as a leader representing underprivileged communities.

Zikode has told the commissioners that he only realized how serious the July unrest was after social media posts suggesting that the home of Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo would be targeted.

He said right there and then, he tried reaching out to KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala.

But he said his attempts were futile: “I thought, as a citizen, I have a duty as well to assist and give the necessary information for the authorities to act, only to find that there was a leadership vacuum. No one wanted to take any responsibility for anything that was happening.”

On Friday, Zikalala told the inquiry that law enforcement agencies lacked resources to handle the unrest situation.

Zikode said the unrest was also triggered by anger from community members.

Cape Town tourism losing around R255 million daily due to cancellation over Omicron – study

Cape Town’s tourism industry has lost around R225 million a day due to sudden cancellations following the confirmation of a new COVID-19 variant.

That’s been revealed on Monday by a snap survey conducted by Cape Town Tourism.

Last week, South African authorities identified a new strain and even though it was still being studied, international air travel was almost immediately affected with countries and airlines cancelling services abruptly.

The snap survey of cancellations following travel bans is painting a grim picture for the international tourism industry.

Including flights and accommodation, it shows losses of over R200 million a day are expected to run into the new year.

Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy said the decision to pull international flights was not based on science.

It means they again need to encourage more local tourists and domestic travellers: “At this moment, we continue to amplify the domestic market. They are exceptionally critical for us now and I think one of the things we need to make sure is that we promote safety.”

Mayco member for Economic Growth James Vos said the current data suggested more than 33,000 tourists cancelled their December holidays in Cape Town.

However, these are early indicators and the numbers could be higher.

SAHRC told July riots were planned at very high political level

The leader of a shack dwellers movement said that the July unrest was planned at a higher political level.

S’bu Zikode has testified as a leader representing a large number of poverty-stricken communities.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), which is looking into the unrest, wanted to get his perspective about what happened.

Zikode sat comfortably in the hot seat at the inquiry on Monday, giving his perspective of the July unrest.

He said that there were already warning signs after former President Jacob Zuma was sent to jail.

Zikode said that the unrest had evidence of political elements.

“We also agree with the view that these riots were planned at a very high political level,” Zikode said.

He also told the commissioners that he came across police who appeared too calm at the time.

“At least those that I met were not really concerned about what was happening. It looks like there was an instruction from someone to stay unbiased to keep your job,” he said.

Although Zikode did not prove that the unrest was planned, he strongly believed that someone or some people were behind it.

Questions raised as Miss SA Lalela Mswane appears in Israel amid travel ban

As the world marks the UN’s Day for Palestinian Solidarity, activists have expressed sadness over the Miss SA’s presence in Israel.

Reigning queen Lalela Mswane is there to participate in the Miss Universe pageant in less than two weeks.

Hashtag NotMyMissSA began trending on Twitter again this weekend, after Mswane posted pictures from within Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv.

Back home, Palestinian activist Taahira Abrahams said as a woman of colour, it was hard seeing Miss SA preparing for the catwalk.

“She wouldn’t have been able to take part on that stage if people didn’t boycott apartheid [in South Africa] because that’s how the apartheid regime ended in South Africa. To smile and hold a flag in an apartheid state is extremely disappointing.”

Africa4Palestine’s Braam Hanekom has raised concern over how Mswane was able to enter the country, after Israel banned travel from South Africa last week.

“Israel places a travel ban on our country, but somehow in the dead of night, Lalela is able to sneak herself into Israel.”

While Miss SA has been criticized for choosing to compete in Israel, Hanekom said more should be done to investigate the pageant’s ties to international Zionist organizations.

“The owners of the trademark Miss South Africa are deeply intact with the [institutions] like the Jewish National Fund, which encourages the stealing of land in Israel.”

Those arguing against vaccine mandates have no legal leg to stand on, says SAHRC

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Monday said citizens who were still arguing about the constitutionality of vaccine mandates and an infringement of their rights had no legal leg to stand on while labour experts were also concerned about how the directives would be enforced.

The discovery of the Omicron variant has put the spotlight firmly on those who are still not jabbed almost a year after South Africa received its first bulk of COVID-19 vaccines.

Government has set up a task team to explore how best to ramp up vaccinations.

Businesses, universities, festival organisers and others are now imposing new rules that will see those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 being excluded from their premises or events.

Science has proven that vaccines are the best way to stop the virus from mutating, forming new variants.

But not everyone agrees that mandatory vaccines are the route to take and SAHRC chair Bongani Majola is warning the private sector that they can’t make up their own rules.

“Government is a government of everybody, private institutions can’t say they can’t be bound by a law of general application, which is passed by Parliament.”

Labour specialist Andrew Levy said he was more concerned about how the government would be able to police companies to make sure they abide by any potential mandatory legislation.

“Will it be done by labour inspectors? They probably aren’t enough to go around. Will wait for complaints from employees? Probably not.”

It’s expected that by next week South Africans will have a clearer idea on what direction the task team has decided to take on the urgent matter.
