Yonwaba’s mom blames NFSAS for her death

Nothing could have prepared Nomvuyiso Manyanya for the funeral of her daughter Yonwaba, who she had seen off to college but who came back in a coffin.

Yonwaba, 26, was a student at eThekwini TVET College in KwaZulu-Natal, where she was studying towards a diploma in electrical and infrastructure construction.

Manyanya said her daughter suffered an asthmatic attack after she was allegedly evicted from her accommodation while still waiting for her National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowance.

Last week thousands of Unisa students complained that they were still waiting to receive their R290 monthly living allowances, which should have been paid at the start of the academic year in February.

Students from Asherville campus in Durban were seen on social media sleeping on the side of the road due to unpaid allowances by the funding scheme.

Manyanya, 47, of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, said her heart broke into pieces as she watched her daughter’s coffin lowered to the ground when she was laid to rest on Saturday.

“I could not believe it when I received a call about two weeks back that my last-born daughter had passed away. Apparently she was evicted from her accommodation, which she shared with other students after they failed to pay rent. She had told me that she was waiting for her allowances from NSFAS,” she said.

Manyanya said she later learnt that Yonwaba, together with 30 other students, had slept out in the open for two days.

“Yonwaba was asthmatic, and sleeping outside made things worse for her. On the day she died she was at a friend’s place as she had asked him if she could take a warm bath as her asthma was giving her problems.

“She died at her friend’s place and her body was found next to the washing basin. What hurts me the most is that my first daughter dropped out of college in East London as she could not afford to pay rent because of NSFAS delays,” she said.

Manyanya said Yonwaba was funded by NSFAS for a hospitality course last year but had to deregister as she could not afford the online lessons which were introduced as a result of the pandemic.

“This year she registered for a new course and I don’t know if that could have caused problems for her with NSFAS,” she said.

Manyanya said she finds comforts in looking after Yonwaba’s two children, who are seven and two years old.

The principal at eThekwini TVET College, Nkosinathi Mchunu, said it has been discovered that Yonwaba did not qualify for either tuition fees or allowances and that at the time of her death she had been at her boyfriend’s place.

“Yes, there are challenges with the application and payment of NSFAS allowances and this appears to be the focus of the students. The students were paid late, however, the incident of the passing on of Yonwaba is not related to the payment allowances.

“The college grieves for the loss of a young lady whose full potential had not yet been realized and we will be praying for her family during their time of bereavement,” he said.

NSFAS chief corporate services officer, Sibongile Mncwabe, said Yonwaba was an NSFAS-funded student in 2020 but for the 2021 academic year her funding had not been confirmed.

“The information on NSFAS record is that she had not met the progression criteria at the time of her passing. She was part of a group of students whose progression status was continuously being queried with the college,” Mncwabe said.

Photos: Zoleka Mandela Gushes Over Her Man

Zoleka Mandela, granddaughter of the late former president of the Republic of South Africa Nelson Mandela and mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, is head over heels in love and we love that for her.

Zoleka has lost many loved ones over the years, so it is always beautiful to see that she is still gaining new people to love.

In 2010, the writer and activist tragically lost her 13-year-old daughter, Zenani Mandela, in a car accident. The following year she lost her son Zenawe Zibuyile at infancy. In 2013 , her grandfather Nelson Mandela passed, followed by her grandmother Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in 2018. Two years later, in 2020, her mother Zindzi Mandela sadly lost her life. In the same year she took to her Instagram account to announce her split on from husband Thierry Bashala, explaining that it’s taken her two years to leave a relationship that “no longer serves” her.Zoleka MandelaLeaving someone you once loved, for eight long years feels like it completely unhinges your entire life until you realize that it’s sparked self-discovery, inner peace and has set you on a path of self-love. It’s taken me two years to leave a relationship that no longer serves me, one that has eroded (for far too many years) my self-esteem, independence, my mental and emotional state, [sic]” she had written.Zoleka Mandela0

Although all of this has affected her mentally and emotionally, she still has a positive outlook on life, “Leaving someone you once loved, reaffirms your strengths, it leaves you feeling more liberated and forces you to look into yourself and to move on even when you’re more comfortable staying in a relationship that (for the worst part) leaves you feeling invisible and undervalued … because you have a fear of abandonment and a fear of being alone” she had also written about her separation from her husband.

Now, the author of When Hope Whispers has finally found love in the arms of her prince charming and man crush, and the two go by the hashtag #UTekkieNoSlamba.

Her msn definitely changed her whole perception of Xhosa men, as she has sworn to never date a Xhosa man ever again.

On one of her post she had said, “Zoleka a few months back … “OMG!!! I would NEVER date a Xhosa man. OMG!!! I would NEVER date a male version of myself. NEVER, shem!” Zoleka a few months later … “OMG!!! Xhosa King aka @king_mayweather_cana_tbe What have you done to me!!! Like, actually just DATE me forever!!! I don’t care what I said a few months ago, the Devil is such a liar and you’ve changed my mind!!!”

Now the couple shares glimpses into their days spent together and all the romantic and goofy things they do together. We are here for this kind of love!

Enough COVID-19 vaccines secured to reach 40 million people, says Ramaphosa

The government says it has paid for doses to cover 40 million of the 59 million South Africans — or enough to reach herd immunity.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has repeatedly condemned “vaccine apartheid” with rich countries buying up most of the vaccine doses.

“As the African continent we are pushing ahead with efforts to expand our vaccine manufacturing capacity with a view to be self-sufficient in vaccine production,” he said.

Ramaphosa announced on Sunday that stricter measures against COVID-19 would be re-imposed.

From Monday, the night curfew will start from 11 pm while non-essential shops, bars, restaurants, and gyms will have to shut at 10 pm.

Gatherings, including political and faith events, will be limited to 250 people outdoors and 100 indoors.

Transport MEC in Gauteng says protests damaging roads

Gauteng’s Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo has called on communities to stop burning tyres on the roads during protests.

He says the damage is creating more trouble as the province deals with a road maintenance backlog.

He says his department has made some progress since the start of the smart mobility programme to patch potholes and maintain roads.

“We are really appealing to our people that when they protest, they must not destroy road infrastructure by burning tyres,” the MEC said.

“Remember, the tar is made from chemicals that give in when there’s fire.”
