Hippo on the loose in Joburg on New Year’s Eve – Video

It might be a fitting end to a strange year, residents of Johannesburg need to be on the lookout for a lone hippo on New Year’s Eve (NYE).

Social media users in the Fourways area have shared footage of the hippo foraging along a river.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital said on Facebook that they had been made aware of the presence of the hippo and that the Gauteng Department of Agricultural and Rural Development (GDARD) had been contacted “and is on scene to assess the situation.”

“GDARD is the official organisation required to assist and make decisions in situations such as this one,” they added.

According to Live Science, hippos are aggressive and are considered very dangerous.

“The hippopotamus is considered the world’s deadliest large land mammal,” they say, adding that hippos kill an estimated 500 people per year in Africa, according to the BBC.

Gauteng’s COVID-19 advisory committee hopes lockdown will lower infections

A scientist on Gauteng’s COVID-19 advisory committee is on Wednesday hopeful that level three regulations will positively affect the province’s second peak.

Provincial numbers modelled before the new regulations estimated that at the height of the second wave, there could be as many as 150,000 active cases in the nation’s economic hub.

The advisory committee is positive that the lockdown restrictions will have a significant positive impact on reducing the peak.

After the imposition of level three lockdown regulations, scientists are relooking their predictions around the intensity of the second wave COVID-19 infections in Gauteng.

As we’ve learnt over the past year, the situation is fluid. But professor Bruce Mellado is confident the intensified regulations will, at the very least, help to prevent super spreader events in time for potential New Year’s celebrations on Thursday night.

“The fact that level three has been imposed will improve the projections that we had before last Monday.”

Mellado said the ban on alcohol sales, restrictions on movement, and intensified regulations about mask-wearing would significantly change the outlook for the nation’s most populace province.

“The numbers will change, there is no question about that, we know that lockdowns have had a drastic impact on how the virus moves and so the estimates will have to be revised.”

Gauteng is bracing for a spike in the number of daily new infections as holidaymakers return home in the next few days.

Video of Julius Malema partying, not social distancing and without wearing mask criticized

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has defended its leader, Julius Malema, after a video of his dancing over the festive season with no physical distancing being maintained and while not wearing a mask was spreading like wildfire on social media.

The video was first shared on social media pages 4 days ago – shortly before the announcement of President Cyril Ramaphosa of the adjusted level 3 lockdown – but the original post has since been deleted.

Ramaphosa said on Monday night that social gatherings had turned into super-spreader events during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to the need to impose stricter lockdown regulations across the country under which all gatherings were banned for 14 days.

In a response on social media, the EFF shared a video clip of the President addressing the nation earlier when he had said that social gatherings should be held outside.

They Tweeted: “Both beautiful events of Black Love were of immediate family, attended by the nine children of Koko Sarah Malema and all of her grandchildren. They were outdoors and in well-ventilated spaces as decreed by the prepaid president of South Africa.”

Malema himself did not seem bothered by the social media uproar judging by his very next post on Twitter after sharing the EFF’s video post.

SA lockdown level 3 – What to do on New Year’s Eve

The year 2020 has indeed been one for the history books!

With Covid-19 and our inability to follow the stipulated guidelines, the president has had to clamp down hard on the festivities that normally usher us into the New Year.

With the curfew being introduced much earlier and the booze supply closed, this year will see many of us go into the New Year in the comfort of our own homes.

So, how can we make lemonade of the situation?

1. Pray

This has been an extraordinary year marred by pain, loss, and depression. Social media has been trending with the idea of lighting a candle at midnight to pray for our country. Why not join in?

2. Host a virtual party and countdown

This might sound like deja vu, but like earlier in the year, this is the time to go back to the virtual way of doing things.

3. Cook up a storm

While you wait for the final countdown to the end of 2020, fire up the stove with some delicious appetizers to make the wait worthwhile.

Dr Tumi’s Dad has died

The year 2020 has claimed so many lives due to Covid 19 and other natural causes. Dr Tumi announced yesterday that he lost his dad, Pastor MD Makweya.

Dr Tumi

“Hi Fam. So sad to announce about the passing of my dear dad. He was such a beautiful gift to our family and the body of Christ. So humbled and honoured for the years God blessed me with him in my life. It was such a great honour to be called his son. One of the greatest gift was him raising me to know Christ and showing me the unfailing love of a father. This is such a great loss in my life and our family. I will deeply and greatly miss him. ” said Dr Tumi on Facebook.

Dr Tumi

Everyone who knows Dr Tumi will tell that he is fond of his dad. He always speaks about how well and Godly he raised them and how he loved them. In an interview with Anele on Real Talk, Dr Tumi said his dad bought him his first keyboard when he was 9. He used to play the church keyboard that was kept at home but his hero dad then decided to buy him one because he could see that there is something musical in him. His dad always wanted him to be an academic but he also knew that he was going to be a musician. His late father was a pastor at Assemblies of God, a church-based in Seshego, Limpopo.

Dr Tumi

Pastor MD Makweya was supportive of Dr Tumi’s music calling and him and elders of the church always invited Dr Tumi to minister to them. “I was invited by the elders at Assemblies of God to perform in the church’s National Youth Convention in Thaba-Nchu, Free State,” he says. “Ministering in the church I grew up in was humbling. It brought all the beautiful childhood memories.” said Dr Tumi.

DR TUMI

Born Tumisang Makweya, Dr Tumi studied medicine at the Medical University of Southern Africa (Mendusa) for six years. He started his own medical practice in Mabopane where he practiced for about 10 years before his music career took off. Earlier this year, Dr Tumi landed a helping hand in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. This was his way of giving back to the community. He volunteered at Tembisa Hospital and other local hospitals at their Covid-19 units.

Dr Tumi has not announced the cause of his dad’s death but has revealed that the burial will be limited to family only due to Covid restrictions. Condolences to The Makweya family at large and may Pastor MD Makweya rest in peace!
