Photos: Unbelievable scenes at Baragwanath Hospital, trauma centre completely empty on New Year’s day for the first time ever

For those who were wondering if lockdown regulations were in fact needed, the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital has achieved a historic first under the amended lockdown level 3 regulations.

Taking to social media, the hospital announced that its trauma centre was completely empty for the first time ver on new year’s day.

In announcing the harsher lockdown level earlier in the week, President Cyril Ramaphosa said one of the primary reasons for the move was to ease the pressure on the health care system.

“Our hospitals – both private and public hospitals – are already close to full capacity in a number of provinces and ICU beds are either full already or rapidly filling up,” he said, noting that Eastern Cape hospital admissions had exceeded numbers registered in the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The level 3 restrictions imposed on the country included a longer curfew and a ban on the sale and transportation of alcohol.

Law enforcement authorities were out in full force on new year’s eve to ensure compliance with reducing the number of alcohol-related trauma cases one of the driving motivations for the restrictions.

3 suspects arrested in Katlehong after shootout with police

It was business as usual for the Ekurhleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) on New Year’s Eve, after the successful arrest of three suspects following a shootout.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, three “suspicious” male suspects were approached by EMPD specialized task team officers in the Katlehong area. The suspects were standing close to two parked cars, a maroon Opel Corsa utility bakkie and a VW Golf.

Upon spotting the offices, the suspects fired shots at police, who retaliated, and a shootout ensued.

During the exchange, one of the suspects, in his mid-30s, was shot and wounded. He was rushed to Thelle Mogoerane hospital for further medical treatment.

The remaining suspects “disappeared into thin air”, said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

Further inspections revealed that the Opel bakkie was reported stolen in Zonkizizwe earlier, and that the VW Golf was being used by the suspects as a getaway car.

Mohkeseng said as soon as the injured suspect, who is currently under police guard, is declared medically fit to stand trial, the trio will have their day in court.

EMPD arrest speedsters all claiming to be late for work

During the silly season, police officers have the pleasure of having to entertain an array of excuses for risky behaviour and 2020 was no different.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) arrested three motorists for reckless and negligent driving on Wednesday and Thursday, before escorting them to the Elsburg police station.

The arrests took place at the corner of Old Heidelberg and Sarel Hattingh road, an area with a 60km/h speed limit.

One of the transgressors was a 36-year-old female driving a Hyundai i30. She was nabbed on Thursday morning for doing 106km/h, and claimed this was because she was late for work, said EMPD spokesperson, Kobeli Mokheseng.

The other drivers were both males. The one drove a Ford Ranger, and the other a VW Polo hatchback.

The former was stopped and handcuffed for going 110km/h, and the latter for speeding at 124km/h.

These drivers too were convinced that claiming to be late for work excused their reckless driving.

Ramaphosa: SA undertaking an ambitious economic recovery plan in 2021

President Cyril Ramaphosa predicted yet another difficult and challenging year for South Africa in 2021.

In his New Year’s message broadcast on Thursday, the president said important progress had been made in vital economic reforms and this would ensure affordable energy, cheaper and faster broadband, and more competitive railways and ports of entry.

He added 2021 signals the much-anticipated start of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which could set Africa on a more virtuous economic path.

Similarly, he expressed such hope for his country, saying the new year starts as South Africa prepares to rebuild its economy.

“We are undertaking an ambitious recovery plan,” he said, adding that the government is accelerating the redistribution of land, creating public employment opportunities, and enabling more black people, women, and the youth to participate and benefit from it.

Ramaphosa said this will be achieved through various partnerships.

He went on to say the disruption brought on by COVID-19 still needs to be top of mind as the country continues to work, learn, trade, and socialize in new ways.

Over R4 million in counterfeit spices seized in Gauteng

R4.5 million in suspected counterfeit spices and packaging have been seized from premises on Old Vereeniging Road on Thursday in Gauteng.

Gauteng MEC for community safety Faith Mazibuko took to Twitter to share images of the goods seized during a warrant search by members of Kliprivier visible policing with the assistance of Spoor & Fisher, a firm that handles the prosecution and enforcement of trademarks, patents, designs, and copyrights.

In Mazibuko’s pictures, there are mountains of sticker rolls that belong to various spices that are under the Unilever brand as well as marked and unmarked spices.

A hot glue gun was also among the items found.

“R4.5 million worth of spices and packaging were seized and taken to the depot of Spoor & Fisher.

“A Tunisian born with RSA ID was detained,” said Mazibuko, adding that the ID was suspected to be fake as well.

Mohale’s hubby Somizi in serious trouble – Cheating scandal takes new twist

Media personality, Somizi Mhlongo, Barleader TV, and Multichoice were served a summons for Dinner With Somizi, on Wednesday.

This follows months after Hastings Moeng accused Somizi and Legend Manqele, who owns Barleader TV, of stealing the idea of ‘Dinner With Somizi’ from him.

Dinner With Somizi is a cooking show that Somizi hosted on 1Magic. The show saw him cooking for Mzansi celebs at his home.

Hastings claimed that he sent the idea of the show to both Somizi and Legend in 2014 and 2016, via email.

Former Radio 702 presenter, Eusebius McKaiser who broke the story back in September, shared the papers that they were served with on Wednesday, on Twitter.

According to Eusebius, Hastings wants compensation from Somizi and the two entities.

He wrote: “Somizi Mhlongo, Barleader TV & Multichoice have had summons served TODAY on behalf of Hastings Moeng seeking “reasonable compensation” plus “15% interest” as the alleged originator of the concept Dinner With Somizi. Moeng wants the court to declare his verbal contract…

… as valid & binding (supported by email evidence that exists); wants the court to declare the concept underpinning Somizi’s show as Moeng’s brainchild & wants the court to direct “reasonable compensation” to be given to Moeng plus rights to contract future seasons etc,” he continued.
