Donald Trump – I do not expect war with Iran

The president spoke after Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that around 750 troops from a rapid response unit of the 82nd Airborne Division were prepared to deploy over the next several days to the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he did not foresee a war with Tehran after pro-Iranian demonstrators stormed the US embassy in Iraq.

“I don’t see that happening,” Trump said at his holiday retreat in Florida when a reporter asked about the possibility of war with the Islamic republic.

“I like peace,” the president said before heading in to New Year’s celebrations.

The president spoke after Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that around 750 troops from a rapid response unit of the 82nd Airborne Division were prepared to deploy over the next several days to the Middle East.

The US had already flown a rapid response team of Marines into Baghdad to reinforce its embassy after the attack Tuesday, which left smoke and flames rising from the compound’s entrance and further heightened tension between Tehran and Washington.

US officials said there were no plans to evacuate the mission, and no US personnel were reported injured.

The US reinforcements “got in there very quickly,” Trump said.

“I think it’s been handled very well.”

He added that “this will not be a Benghazi,” a reference to an attack in 2012 by radical Islamists on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Four Americans were killed inside the smoke-clogged building including the ambassador, Chris Stevens.

Dr Tumi hopes 2020 will be a better year

Gospel artist Dr Tumi has changed the lives of many people through his charity foundation and says he hopes to make even more of a difference in 2020.

The star told TshisaLIVE that he wants to commit more time to his foundation. His vision is to reach out to more people and help them.

Resolutions or nah?

Resolutions are absolutely important. I think one needs to not only decide or make a resolve of what they are going to do next year, but also to reflect on what they were not able to do. Say, ‘I’m going to improve this area of my life, I need to take better decisions in these areas and I’m going to work harder to achieve this.’

Dr Tumi

It gives you a nice starting point. So when you start the year, you are not random, but you actually have a game plan for the year.

What do you want to change in your life in 2020?

I want to commit more time to my foundation and the work that we have been doing for our people. I want to help more people and reach out to more people.

What is on your New Year’s lunch menu?

My new diet is based on cutting sugar and carbs. I’m not sure what is going to be on my lunch menu yet, but there won’t be any carbs. I’ll probably have a lot of meat on New Year’s Day.

Dr Tumi

What would you like to see change in SA in 2020?

My hope for 2020 is for it to be a better year and men to stand up and do better. Men need to be good and take care of women, not abuse them. We can stop the abuse of women and children and we can speak out more against abuse.

Hangover on January 1 or going for a run?

I will be working in Potchefstroom, so no time for running. I will be coming from Durban. It will be work, work, work.

Dr Tumi

What do you want to leave behind in 2019?

I want to leave behind any form of negativity. I want 2020 to be a positive year. I want to focus on doing things that are really positive and be in a positive space as well. The regret that comes from having not done everything that you wanted to do, the way you wanted to do it. Negativity and any form of regret.

Man Utd manager Solskjaer happy with striking options

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he is not concerned about his attacking options, with Mason Greenwood’s development compensating for the loss of Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku scored 42 goals in 96 United games but joined Inter Milan in August.

“We always believed Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were going to score goals but Mason has filled a big void,” said Solskjaer.

“I’m not worried about goals from centre-forwards.”

Greenwood, 18, has scored eight goals in 22 first-team appearances this season, with the majority of his playing time coming as a substitute.

United was heavily linked with Red Bull Salzburg striker Erling Braut Haaland before the teenager agreed on a switch to German side Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

However, Solskjaer, who is understood to have flown to Austria to speak to Haaland as United considered a bid, insists the failure to sign his fellow Norwegian does not leave him under-staffed in the attack.

“Romelu’s a good striker and he’ll always score goals but it was time for him to move on,” he said.

“We didn’t find the right one outside our club but we had Mason.

“Mason’s on eight now. Marcus, I don’t know – 14 or 15? Anthony has quite a few.”

Solskjaer also said the way a new signing would fit into the dressing room would be key to their considerations in January.

“I’m optimistic we can keep players fit and if the right ones become available we do have the resources,” he said.

“There’s no point suddenly bringing someone else in now for the sake of three or four months if that can disrupt any good feeling or chemistry in the group because the chemistry in the group is really good.

“It has to be the right type and it has to be a good investment for the long term as well.”

More than 1 000 firearms surrendered to police stations

More than 1,000 firearms and over 14,000 rounds of ammunition have been surrendered to police stations in the first month of an amnesty.

People illegally in possession of firearms have been encouraged to hand them over in the next five months, without fear of prosecution.

Vishnu Naidoo, the spokesperson for the national police commissioner, said the police are focused on the possession of illegal firearms but urged people whose licenses are out of date to use the opportunity to renew those licenses.

Naidoo clarified that if a firearm had been used in the commission of a crime, the owner would not be immune from prosecution.

Seven dead & more than 200 homes destroyed following Australia fires

Bushfires have killed at least seven people in the Australian state of New South Wales since Monday, say police. The latest fires, which raced towards the coast this week, have also destroyed more than 200 homes.

Conditions have eased slightly, and a major road that was closed in Victoria was reopened for two hours on Wednesday to allow people to leave.

But many people remain in fire-hit areas – in one town, police dropped off 1.6 tonnes of drinking water by boat.

The seven deaths in New South Wales include:

  • Two people found in separate cars on Wednesday morning
  • A father and son who stayed behind to defend their home and farm equipment
  • A 28-year-old volunteer firefighter who was killed when wind flipped his fire engine.

Local media also reported a further death in Victoria. The deaths brings the total of fire-related fatalities across Australia this season to at least 18, with warnings this could rise.

Of the homes destroyed, 43 were in East Gippsland, Victoria, while another 176 were in New South Wales.

Earlier on Wednesday, New South Wales Rural Fire Service said 916 homes had been destroyed this season, with another 363 damaged, and 8,159 saved.

In Mallacoota, Victoria – where thousands fled to the beach on Tuesday – police boats arrived with 1.6 tonnes of water for residents.

They also brought food, a paramedic and medical supplies.

At the same time, police warned people in Sunbury, Victoria – around 40km (25 miles) north-west of Melbourne – to leave the area, as an emergency fire warning was in place.

Earlier, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said workers would take advantage of the milder weather on Wednesday to clear roads and restore power.

But she said temperatures were expected to rise again on Saturday.

“At the very least, weather conditions will be at least as bad as what they were yesterday,” she said.

The fire service warned they had been unable to reach some people in remote areas.

“We’ve got reports of injuries and burn injuries to members of the public,” said New South Wales rural fire commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.

“We haven’t been able to get access via roads or via aircraft – it’s been socked in [runways have been closed] or too dangerous.”

In Mallacoota, many people spent the night sleeping in their cars or on deck chairs.

Victoria Emergency Commissioner Andrew Crisp said – as well as the police vessels – “a large barge” was sailing from Melbourne to the town with food, water and 30,000 litres of fuel.

In Cann River, a town around 80km (50 miles) inland from Mallacoota, residents warned that food supplies were running low.

Further north in Ulladulla, New South Wales, people were queuing outside supermarkets – while cuts to mobile networks and landlines meant people also waited to use payphones.

The military said amphibious ships were setting off from Sydney and would arrive in fire-hit coastal areas of New South Wales and Victoria by Friday.

Meanwhile, a woman from Mallacoota who took a photo that went viral has spoken about the image.

Allison Marion took the picture of her 11-year-old son, Finn, moving their family to safety in a powerboat.

“Finn drove the boat and my other son looked after the dog in the boat and [I am] very proud of both of them,” she told ABC News.

When the family returned to land, as conditions eased, they went to check on their home.

“Our street somehow escaped the fire somehow,” she said. “However, I feel for many people in our community who have lost their homes. It’s just truly saddening.”

As South Africans across the country sit down to make New Year‘s resolutions, Musa Sukwene has made his own list of changes. The star told TshisaLIVE that he wants to leave all the bad memories of 2019 behind and start a new chapter. One that includes less procrastination.

Resolutions or nah?

I don’t really make resolutions but I start pre-planning everything.

Musa Sukwene

What do you want to change in your life?

The greatest thing that I would like to change in my life would be procrastinating. I can do things even quicker and faster than I would have anticipated.

What is on your New Year’s lunch menu?

Definitely 7 colours vibes. I usually spend New Year with family so everything is seven colours.

What would you like to see change in SA in 2020?

My wish would be to see us live a peaceful place, where everyone expresses themselves in the true sense of what they really want to be, so we give space and life to everything. That’s what I want to see change in SA.

Musa Sukwene

Hangover on January 1 or going for a run?

LOL! I’m not quite sure but I can give you hint that it’s definitely not running so I think it’s gonna be a hangover.

What do you want to leave behind in 2019?

I want to leave behind everything in 2019 and carry on with the new year because it’s the history of what it was and we are starting a new chapter. I want to leave all the bad memories of 2019.
