Nigeria plans reciprocal flights ban on four countries over Omicron

Nigeria plans to ban flights from Argentina, Britain, Canada and Saudi Arabia from this week in retaliation for being added to those countries’ red lists over the detection of the Omicron coronavirus variant last month, the aviation minister said.

Several countries have restricted the movement of people from some African nations since the Omicron variant was first detected in southern Africa and Hong Kong. It has since spread to at least 57 countries.

In recorded comments shared with journalists on Sunday, Nigeria’s aviation minister Hadi Sirika said he had recommended that the four countries should be placed on a COVID-19 “red list,” which would entail a ban on flights.

“We have given our input as aviation that it is not acceptable by us and we recommend that those countries, Canada, UK, Saudi Arabia and Argentina be also put on the red list, just like they did similarly to us,” Sirika said.

“So, I am very sure between now and Monday or perhaps Tuesday maximum, all those countries will be put on the red list. Once they are on the red list, which means they are banned, their airlines will also be banned.”

Britain was the first country to announce a travel “red list”, which Nigeria has described as unjust and unfair.

The World Health Organisation has said countries should apply an “evidence-informed and risk-based approach” when deciding on travel measures related to Omicron, including possible screening or quarantine of international passengers, adding that blanket bans do not prevent its spread.

Numsa demands Comair employees be paid full salaries

The National Union of Metalworkers is demanding that from 1 January all employees at Comair be paid their full salaries.

Most have only been taking home around 70% of their pay, while benefits have been drastically reduced, the union claimed.

The aviation industry, which has been hit hard by COVID-19, forced Comair to ground its flights in July due to financial difficulties and was subsequently placed in business rescue.

Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said: “It is our firm view that the business rescue practitioners are milking Comair. They cost an average R1 million per month according to management. They are making a fortune whilst employees are sinking into debt and despair because their standard of living has been drastically reduced.

“Fortunately, the backward collective agreement will expire on 31 December. This means a new collective agreement will have to be negotiated with new terms and conditions.”

Fatherhood changed my life – Tino Chinyani

You might know Tinotenda Tino Chinyani as a model and TV presenter but he’s adding singer to his list after launching his first single Nothing For Free on Friday in celebration of his birthday.

“I’m a servant of the people. I’m trying to do the Lord’s work here in my time, I’m trying to give back as much as I can with this music for as long as I possibly can,” he told TshisaLIVE.

He’s been writing music throughout the lockdown while in the confines of his home due to the Covid-19 pandemic regulations and has consecutively been recording music for the past two months.
His venture into the music industry adds another brick towards building his Tiyani Afrika empire which he uses as his moniker (which is a combination of the first two letters of his name and the last four letters of his surname), the entity that established a clothing brand and now music.

“Tiyani Afrika is my legacy, it’s my empire. I’m doing this for Tiyani (his son) I’m setting things up so when he grows up, I want to know that he has everything possible planned for him for when he decides what he wants to venture into. From the clothing company, music masters … everything is in his name.”

“I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for him. As young as he is, I’m proud of him as young as he is. I can fail at everything, music or fail at love but I will not fail that boy. Fatherhood changed my life, fatherhood has saved my life. I’m very grateful to Tiyani and Simphiwe and what they have done for my life.”
Tino says he does not intend to focus solely on one genre and will release singles until he has a body of work on his birthday next year on December 10 but won’t steer away from his modelling career or life as a TV personality.

“Modelling introduced me to everything. You’re going to see me model, you’re going to see me a lot on TV and not just as a host.”

Tino Chinyani

While the mother of his son and ex-partner Simphiwe “Quing Simz” Ngema also recently launched a new single, Tino says she did not inspire his plunge into the music scene but has imparted knowledge that he’s managed to use in everything he does.

“Her council, her guidance and wisdom has helped me dodge a lot of potholes [in the entertainment industry] so I’m really grateful to have her influence in my life. She’s been a big pivotal part of my career with regards to the knowledge and wisdom she shared.

Black Coffee featured in Mercedes F1 world celebrities video tribute to Lewis Hamilton – Video

Mercedes Benz posted a video of a compilation of global stars wishing Lewis Hamilton well in his final race. The footage had snippets of the legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson, the award-winning actress Gabrielle Union and her husband Dwyane Wade, the singer Janelle Monaè, the musician and award-winning actress Queen Latifah, British hitmaker Rita Ora, the chart-topping singer Justin Bieber and his wife Halley Bieber not forgetting our beloved Black Coffee and many more.

It’s nothing short of amazing that Nkosinathi Innocent Sizwe Maphumulo, who we know as Black Coffee, grew up in a township but is now being recognized by the luxury vehicle brand Mercedes as a global star worthy of being featured in a video wishing their star racer a win.

Mercedes Benz is a successful global luxury car brand. The brand doesn’t associate itself with just anyone or just anything; its slogan is ‘ The best knows no alternative ‘. Them recognising Black Coffee is a huge deal. It certainly means he’s doing something right in the global landscape. He achieved this with stars like Drake, P.Diddy, Swiss Beatz and the late Avicii. Black Coffe also got international recognition from playing on world stages like Ibiza, England, Germany, exclusive American parties and global festivals. His being featured on this video also means he’s a force to be reckoned with.

The race car driver, who was named Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton by his parents, is a British race car driver currently driving for Mercedes Benz. He’ll be racing against M. Verstappen, who drives for Redbull, S. Perez, who also goes for Redbull, L. Norris, who drives for Mc Laren and C Sainz Jr, who drives for Ferrari. Lewis is currently the world’s best race car driver with more wins, pole positions, and podium finishes than Michael Schumacher. He’s truly remarkable because he’s the only black man with such success in the sport.

Competition Commission announces deal to lower price of Covid PCR test to R500

South Africans will start paying less for the Covid-19 PCR test after the Competition Commission reached an agreement with two major laboratories, Ampath and Lancet Laboratories, on the reduction of Covid-19 PCR test prices.

In terms of the agreement, Ampath and Lancet Laboratories agreed to reduce the price of the Covid-19 PCR test with immediate effect from R850 to less than R500 per test.

The commissioner of the Competition Commission, Tembinkosi Bonakele, on Sunday announced the agreement during a virtual media briefing.

“The Competition Tribunal upon application by the parties has confirmed the groundbreaking agreement between the Competition Commission and each of the two largest private pathology laboratories in South Africa. The agreement settled a dispute on the pricing of Covid-19 PCR tests,” Bonakele said.

Bonakele said the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for Covid-19, which is done in a lab, was critical during the pandemic especially as more companies and higher learning institutions require unvaccinated people to take the test, at their own cost, in order to continue to gain access to their premises.

“The PCR Covid-19 test has become essential in the fight against Covid-19, whilst there are other forms of testing, PCR tests are required by doctors and various institutions,” he said.

The commission on Saturday said it had reached an agreement with Ampath and Lancet Laboratories on the reduction of Covid-19 PCR test prices.

This followed a formal complaint received by the commission from the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) against private pathology laboratories, alleging that the price for supplying PCR tests for coronavirus was unfairly inflated, exorbitant and unjustifiable for South African consumers.

The price charged by private pathology laboratories for a Covid PCR test is said to be around R850 per test.

The Competition Commission said between September and October this year, it was alerted through a number of meetings and telephonic discussions, including discussions with the Department of Health and healthcare funders, of a possible pricing abuse for Covid-19 PCR tests.

“In the main, it was alleged that private pathology laboratories have experienced substantial cost reductions in conducting Covid-19 PCR tests and were processing significant volumes (especially during infection waves), yet the price charged by the private pathology laboratories for Covid-19 PCR tests remained persistently high and unchanged at R850,” the commission said in a statement.

Fugitive Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro due in Verulam court

Arrested former Portuguese banker Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the SA Police Service said.

Spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said the convicted fraudster wanted by the Portuguese government was arrested in Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

He said Rendeiro would appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court, as part of his extradition process, and not the Durban Magistrate’s Court as earlier communicated.

Rendeiro allegedly fled his conviction and prison sentence for fraud charges involving about R740 million.

“Mr Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro is a Portuguese national who absconded from Portugal after being convicted on a multi-million dollar fraud case and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment before he escaped.”

The head of the judicial police of Portugal, Luis Neves, brought this matter to the attention of National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Khehla Sitole, during a bilateral meeting at the 89th Interpol General Assembly in Istanbul, Turkey on November 24.

General Sitole committed to tracking and tracing the fugitive after it emerged he might be hiding in South Africa.

“Members from the Interpol NCB [National Crime Bureau ] in Pretoria, acting on an Interpol Red Notice, traced the fugitive to a location in Umhlanga Rocks where he was arrested,” Naidoo said.

The Portuguese authority welcomed the news of De Oliveira Rendeiro’s arrest and sent words of gratitude and praise to the National Commissioner and the SAPS team for speedily arresting him.”

Death toll rises to six following heavy hailstorm in Mthatha villages

The death toll has risen to six following a heavy hailstorm that wreaked havoc in Mthatha villages in the Eastern Cape. More than 19 people are still in hospital, while hundreds of homeless people say they are still waiting for government’s intervention.

Many have no food, no clothes, electricity and clean water. Bereaved families say they have no means to bury their loved ones. The Ngolomane family lost their 17-year-old daughter to the storm.
The most important issue is that they must understand that we need shelter out of everything that has just happened, at least they should have provided shelter, whether it is temporary or permanent structures or whatever. As taxpayers we always expect the government to do something, there is nothing they have provided. Every department has just come and passed by, nothing provided, even the institution for counselling,” says Zukisani Ngolomane.

Disaster Management in the OR Tambo District Municipality has been busy on the ground collecting data. Plans to help the affected communities are on the cards.

“We are on-site ever since this incident took place, we are busy gathering data so that we can be able to quantify the damage and also structure our interventions. We are going to have short-term interventions, medium and long-term interventions. But we are looking into making sure that people have temporal shelter. We will be working with various departments because we can not deal with this as the district municipality alone,” says Zimkhitha Macingwane, OR Tambo District Municipality spokesperson.

Former president Jacob Zuma takes a swipe at Ramaphosa in new book

Former president Jacob Zuma’s tell-all autobiography has been launched, and one passage of the book takes a swipe at President Cyril Ramaphosa of whom it is said, with him at the helm, the country has been directionless for the past four years.

The long-awaited autobiography, titled Jacob Zuma Speaks, has been on the cards since Zuma announced plans to write it during the ANC’s 54th national conference in December 2017, and his daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has described it as the first of many books her father is set to write.
Zuma-Sambudla took to her Twitter page to share a passage of the book focusing on the ANC’s adaptation of the policy of land expropriation without compensation at its 54th national conference at Nasrec in December 2017.

“In the end Zuma’s firmer stance on the land issue culminated in the landmark adoption of the expropriation of land without compensation policy at its 54th national conference in Nasrec, in 2017. But almost four years later, the policy has yet to be implemented,” reads the passage.

“The untruth about the work that we have done really demonstrates that the truth is important in society, for the society to be well informed, to know what has happened because there is no use to create stories because you have a powerful machinery to do so,” Zuma said.

The book’s publishers, Xarra Books, said the work was to tell Zuma’s side of the story after many years of him being cast in a negative light.

“Much has been said about President Jacob Zuma, most of which casts him in a negative light. This is often deliberate. The effect has been to airbrush out (of) history any positive contribution he has made. Jacob Zuma Speaks attempts to provide the necessary historical balance,” wrote the publishers in a flyer advertising the book.

Relatives appealing for help after family of five allegedly kidnapped in KZN Midlands

Relatives of a family of five, who appear to have been kidnapped from their farm in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, are appealing for assistance. The family including two children, one just a month old, was taken from their farm last month.

The farmhouse at Boston in Mpendle in KwaZulu-Natal’s Midlands is deserted, with an unkempt yard. 64-year-old, Sizwesenkosi Ngcobo, his fiancée Thandazile Khuboni-Zondi and their two babies aged two and a-month-old as well Khuboni-Zondi’s brother Bonokwakhe Khuboni was last seen in November.

Relatives suspect that they were kidnapped. The only person left behind is a 90-year-old grandmother who is partially blind and hard of hearing.

Ngcobo’s older sister, Nobuhle Ngcobo, says her brother’s light motor vehicle was captured in CCTV camera footage on 16 November heading toward Bulwer.

It’s not clear if it had occupants as it had been fitted with curtains. She says they want closure and justice.

“We would like to urge the police to intervene and find them. Right now we don’t know whether they are alive or dead, we want to find closure as a family. We want those responsible to be arrested. Police need to get the perpetrators so that they’re punished for what they have done.”

Ngcobo says they now fear for their own lives.

“We are really worried because we are not safe there are cars that just roam outside our house day and night. On Thursday, when the children were about to go and play soccer in Boston they saw a car that stood a road above our house before circling down to the front and opened their windows looking at our house. We don’t know how safe we are if they can take the whole family of five in such a manner.”

So far no one has been arrested and the search continues for the missing family.

He says there has been poor investment in the infrastructure and that the city needs R12-billion to fix it.

“The city has very, very old infrastructure and it has been going for many, many decades. There has been poor investment in infrastructure and what we are doing by addressing here and there is putting a badge on a festering wound,” he said.

ANC scrambling to raise R200 million for staff salaries ahead of Christmas – report

The Sunday Times reports that the ANC is scrambling to raise about R200 million to cover its debt and pay employees before the Christmas break.

Employees are facing a bleak festive season because the party owes workers three months in wages.

Employees worked throughout the local government elections despite not being paid for five months.

The workers were only paid their salaries for August and September last week after they increased protest action and launched social media attacks on treasurer-general Paul Mashatile, the Sunday Times writes.

According to the publication’s sources, Mashatile confirmed the R200 million figure at previous meetings and he will table a plan to raise the funds at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting next week.

The ruling party has a salary bill of more than R12 million due to unpaid salaries for October, November, and December.

The party also owes at least R140 million in provident fund debts as well as recurring pay as you earn tax debt and undisclosed amounts in medical aid and UIF debts.
