He had planned to rob a shop with his friend, but he ran out of luck. The thug was beaten to death on Tuesday, 3 August by a mob, who chased him for more than 2km.
According to witnesses from Olievenhoutbosch Plaza, Tshwane, two suspects entered the mall and tried to rob a shop.
The thugs locked up Pep Cell Store workers at the back office.
They then took more than 100 cellphones and loaded them into a big bag.
But the security guard managed to escape, ran to the door, and body-checked one of the thugs who dropped his gun.
The thug picked up the gun, fired a shot at the guard who was running for his life.
But the gunshot grabbed the attention of shoppers, so thugs left the bag and ran outside the mall.
They were overpowered by shoppers, and one ran away while the other was caught.
Shopper Samuel Chauke said a taxi patrol car, motorists, and shoppers chased the thug on foot.
“The thug fired shots until he ran out of bullets. Then he was caught after a 2km chase and killed.”
Community members have vowed that thugs who rob shops will lose their lives.
They said crime had been rampant and gangsters were terrorizing people, stealing from them.
“We suspect these two thugs are part of the gangs who terrorize the community,” said a resident.
The Alexandra Randburg-Midrand-Sandton local and long-distance Taxi Association said it would never allow the mall to be robbed by thugs.
Rank manager Letjepe Maela said they chased the suspect until he ran out of bullets. “He even tried to kill himself, but angry people beat him up with everything they had,” he said.
Shop manager Tretty Mokala said the thugs took almost R17 000 from the till, while one was loading the cellphones.
“This is the fourth time thugs stole cellphones and money from our shop. The workers are still traumatized, and we will organize counselling for them.”
Police spokesman Captain Mavela Masondo said: “A case of business robbery was opened.”
Masondo said a case of murder was opened against people who killed a man they suspected to be behind the robbery.
He said police were looking for the other suspect behind the robbery.
