Absa uses nanotechnology to disinfect ATMs

Absa has announced that it has intensified efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus at its ATMs by applying a “nanotechnology solution” to its machines.

“Many South Africans depend on access to cash daily and accessing it in a safe and hygienic manner through Absa ATMs nationwide is now a reality,” said Absa RBB Managing Executive for Physical Channels Tshiwela Mhlantla.

“We have commenced the application of the photocatalytic nanotechnology solution to Absa ATMs, ensuring that the hygiene of our ATMs is improved perpetually – a first for South Africa.”

Absa said this nanotechnology solution delivers world-class levels of cleanliness and hygiene at its ATMs.

The solution is a water-based photocatalyst, which means it is activated by a light source and does not require constant reapplication.

Once applied, it is long-lasting and eliminates the need for constant cleaning of the ATMs with harsh chemical materials, the bank said.

“It is discreet and will not impede ATM usage,” Mhlantla said.

“It is entirely safe and has been deployed as a solution globally in industries, including the food industry and hospitals where human interaction is high.” .

ATM safety during COVID-19
Absa noted that at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it committed to prioritising the health and safety of its customers and colleagues at its branches and facilities.

It also rolled out social distancing posters at all ATM sites and floor markers where this was feasible.

“We have continued to advocate transacting through our fully digital self-service channels for additional safer and convenient banking options,” Mhlantla said.

“We encourage our customers to join us in prioritising the nation’s health by washing hands with soap and water, using hand sanitisers, wearing protective face masks and observing social distance protocols.

Investigation underway into recent foul air in Gauteng

The government has promised to release the findings into its probe of the recent stink that hovered between Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

The stink is believed to have been a combination of elevated levels of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide.

Officials from the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and the Gert Sibande district municipality in Mpumalanga visited the Sasol Secunda Plant on 18 February.

They went to check on operations which were believed to be the possible source of the sulphur stench experienced in parts of the two provinces.

DEFF spokesperson Albi Modise said during their inspection, they found that the release of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from the Sasol plant were within the approved limits of the Atmospheric Emission Licence (AEL) issued to them by the Gert Sibanda municipality on 23 April 2019.

DEFF and the municipality could not definitively reveal what the major source of the air pollution was.

“The DEFF and Gert Sibanda municipality suspect that the stench experienced over parts of Gauteng earlier this month may have been the result of the cumulative impact from a number of sources in the surrounding areas.

“While initial investigations have shown that the sulphur dioxide levels were in compliance with ambient air quality standards across all stations in the week of 11 to 17 February, levels of hydrogen sulphide were found to have been elevated at times during the week in question,” Modise said.

Extreme peaks were noted at Lebohang and Springs monitoring stations.

In Pretoria, hydrogen sulphide measurements at the South African Weather Service’s station in Irene, Centurion, showed that hydrogen sulphide exceeded the World Health Organisation recommendation on the 12, 15 and until 17 February, with the highest peak of 61 parts per billion (ppb) on 16 February at 01:00.

“The measurements show that there were two typical periods during the day when the levels of hydrogen sulphide were most severe, around 01:00 and 11:00 in the mornings. Such peaks are typical of transported air with pollution from high-level sources such as tall stacks,” Modise said.

Modise added that the WHO recommended that hydrogen sulphide concentrations should not exceed 5.02 ppb within a 30-minute averaging period in order to avoid substantial complaints about odour annoyance among the exposed population.

“There was also a low-pressure system in the north of the Mozambique Channel that gave rise to a rather uncommon circulation pattern over the region. These conditions created prevailing south-easterly winds that allowed for the transportation of air pollution from the Mpumalanga industrial region into Gauteng, particularly over the cities of Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

“It has therefore been recommended that other sources that could have contributed to the odour experienced in the Gauteng also be investigated. These include power plants and wastewater works that also emit hydrogen sulphide. The findings of the probe will be made available once completed,” said Modise.

New information on detective Charl Kinnear’s murder emerges

As parliamentarians vowed, this week, to find answers into the killing of top detective Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear, a report which contains serious findings has emerged.

Kinnear’s widow, Nicolette, turned to the parliamentary portfolio committee on police for answers to the September murder of the Anti-Gang Unit detective outside their home in Bishop Lavis.

The contents of the report, dated October 6, which bears the signature of Divisional Commissioner: Visible Policing Lieutenant General Moeketsi Sempe has according to sources, never been shared with top officials.

Sempe was tasked by national commissioner General Khehla Sitole to launch an investigation into events that led to Kinnear’s murder.

The report has found glaring omissions of crucial information and failure by those in power to act.

It said that the killing of Kinnear could have been avoided had information on the interception of his phone been shared with top officers.

Sitole’s spokesperson did not deny nor confirm the existence of the Sempe report, but made reference to the criminal and departmental investigations currently underway, as well as Nicolette’s petition to parliament.

National police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said he was “not at liberty to disclose” any information outside the processes.

In an attempt to reach Sempe, the Weekend Argus was told that he “retired from service” in November.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that Sempe’s contract was not renewed.

However, Sempe alleged that on the basis of the evidence at his disposal, the police top brass knew of the impending threat to Kinnear’s life.

But the acting provincial commissioner at the time and deputy national commissioner, crime detection, Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi, cancelled a critical meeting where the threat was to be discussed.

Information from the Hawks (Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations) also noted three other officers, including the head of the Anti-Gang Unit, Major General Andre Lincoln and Major General Jeremy Vearey’s lives were also in danger.

According to the report, Mfazi allegedly requested a meeting on November 21, 2019, to discuss critical information on the threat to the officers.

However, on November 22, 2019, at around 5.47 am, the meeting was cancelled via email.

There was no evidence to indicate how Mfazi handled the situation in line with the requirements of the SAPS security policy, the report said.

Other findings by the Sempe investigation included that Lincoln attempted to introduce interventions to protect Kinnear after serious threats to his life surfaced by deploying members of the AGU to perform security functions at his house from November 14 to December 13, 2019.

However, this form of security was not sanctioned in terms of the applicable policy, but became necessary under the stated circumstances.

This arrangement was intended for a short-term period pending a formal security threat assessment appraisal.

“The withdrawal of this physical security by Lincoln was well within his competence, given the absence of a related security threat assessment appraisal… In the absence of a security appraisal to determine the need, it is not unreasonable to withdraw, lest it translates to legal or other policy transgressions,” Sempe said.

He added: “It needs to be mentioned that the physical security at the Kinnear home had been withdrawn nine months prior to the commission of the crime in question”.

The security presence also followed the killing of a Lt Col Kay who was attached to Provincial Firearm, Liquor and Second Hand Goods service.

The report noted that the attack was a case of “a mistaken identity” because Kinnear was referred to as “K” in the underworld. It also added that no physical security assessment on the house was ever done as Kinnear was sceptical about the involvement of Crime Intelligence in his security appraisal and “as such elected to ignore calls made on him to consider his security differently”.

Kinnear was investigating crimes by underworld gang bosses and police at the time of his death.

The Hawks information which was submitted to the top brass, noted the illegal interception of Kinnear’s phone by a suspect, Zane Kilian, who was arrested after Kinnear’s death and is currently in custody.

Man arrested for illegal possession of lion bones worth R2.3 million

A 37-year-old man is expected to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates Court on Monday for illegal possession of lion bones worth approximately R2.3 million.

The man was arrested after members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Germiston, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Dog unit, and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development conducted a sting operation last Friday in Krugersdorp.

The investigation team received a tip-off last Thursday about a man who kept lion bones in his premises without valid permits.

Following the tip-off, they intercepted the premises and discovered massive lion-dried bones in the garage packaged in boxes and also from the clandestine laboratory inside bags ready for exportation to an unknown destination.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect’s permit to possess lion bones and exportation has expired in 2016 and 2020 respectively.

Prince Harry and Meghan make shocking claims in a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey

Prince Harry, who shocked Britain last year when he and his wife Meghan stepped back from royal duties, told US interviewer Oprah Winfrey that he had worried about history repeating itself, according to excerpts released on Sunday.

The CBS broadcast network released two brief clips from Winfrey’s interview of the couple, which is scheduled to air on March 7. It is the first TV interview the couple, formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have given since making their homes in California last year.

“My biggest concern was history repeating itself,” Harry said, apparently referring to his mother Princess Diana, who was hounded by the British press and died at age 36 in a car crash in Paris after her divorce from Prince Charles.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Harry, 36, was seated next to Meghan, 39, and holding her hand. The couple announced this month that they are expecting their second child.
I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting her talking to you with my wife by my side,” Harry said. “Because I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her (Diana), going through this process by herself all those years ago.
“It’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we had each other,” Harry added.

In the clips, Winfrey said that no subject was off limits and at one point tells the couple “you have said some pretty shocking things here,” including that their situation had been “almost unsurvivable.

GP health dept plans to open up more vaccine sites this week

The Gauteng Department of Health plans to open more COVID-19 vaccination sites this week.

Officials have already administered 16,800 jabs to healthcare workers at the Steve Biko and Baragwanath academic hospitals.

The national Department of Health received another 80,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccines at the weekend, which will be rolled out as part of an extended implementation study.

The George Mukhari and Charlotte Maxeke hospitals will now be added to the list of key vaccination sites where healthcare workers will be immunized.

After minor hiccups including delays at the Steve Biko Hospital, it’s hoped that the process will run smoothly going forward.

Last week, Gauteng Premier David Makhura gave the assurance that there were improvements and capacity issues would be ironed out.

He also appealed to members of the public to be patient while those on the frontlines are prioritized.

Bheki Cele on police killings – We are under attack

The search for the killers of two on-duty Kraaifontein police officers continues.

The sergeant and a constable were out on patrol in Bloekombos on Sunday, when they were ambushed.

Their deaths bring to six the numbers of officers who’ve been murdered in the country in just under two weeks.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has reiterated that officers are under siege, even more so in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

“There is war here. We must fight that war, for the fact that we have dead bodies here tells us that we are under attack.”

The latest attack in Cape Town on Sunday coincided with the funeral of yet another slain officer in Durban.

Constable Royal Ndlovu was attending to a domestic complaint earlier this month when he was killed.

Cele, who spoke at Ndlovu’s funeral, said officers should do whatever it took to safeguard themselves when confronted by criminals.

“We must repel that and make sure that when the dust settles, we are not picking up the dead bodies of the police…we must pick [up] the other body, not the police’s.”

Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for the killers of the Cape Town officers through a 72-hour activation plan.

Proper data management will boost fight against GBV: Gauteng Safety

Capturing the correct data will help strengthen the fight against gender-based violence in the country, says acting head of the Gauteng Community Safety Department, Sipho Thenjekwayo.

He was commenting on the launch of the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Data Management Command Centre.

Ikhaya Lethemba Victim Empowerment Centre in Johannesburg is running the project. It is intended to give support and care for gender-based violence victims. It will also track response to the needs of victims.

gender-based violence

“One of the things which we have done as a province, is to take this data management and research very seriously. One of the battles we must win in terms of gender-based violence is data management.

Data all over the world, once properly managed, it gives you an edge, you are able to fight, you are able to show the scale of the problem. You are not just being emotional about the problems and challenges on gender-based violence, but you have data to back it up,” says Thenjekwayo.

Government has been accused of complacency in dealing with the scourge.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has recently conceded that some police officers need to be trained to fully understand the seriousness of gender-based violence.

Cele, intends to open a unit that will specifically deal with the crime. He has sent out a strong warning to police officers that subjected victims of GBV to secondary trauma, saying they will face serious consequences.

DA calls for those behind Mayibuye Primary School opening delay held accountable

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng wants those responsible for delaying the opening of the multi-million-rand Mayibuye Primary School in Tembisa to be held accountable.

In 2015, the Gauteng government promised to build a new school that would accommodate 1,200 pupils who were currently learning in a makeshift school that is reaching a dilapidated state.

Construction began in 2017, but to date, the school was yet to be opened, with the department of infrastructure saying there were a number of stumbling blocks – including structural changes, which would require more money.

So far more than R86 million had been spent.

Questions had been raised about the primary school after the government announced that the school would be handed over to the community of Mayibuye in January 2019, but this has not happened, five years after the construction began.

The latest explanation regarding the delay was that the education department had now requested structural changes that would cost the government more than R30 million to complete the school.

The DA’s shadow minister of infrastructure Alan Fuchs said the delay was a result of poor planning and lack of political will.

“Numerous additional delays were brought about by poor planning, lack of adherence to building control regulations. Poor project management and negligence.”

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission in Gauteng has planned an urgent meeting with those involved in an effort to speed up the process so that the school could open its doors for learning and teaching.

Microsoft to launch The New Windows operating system soon

A mysterious new version of Microsoft’s Windows operating system is set to roll out in the near future, according to a tweet by reputed leaker WalkingCat.

According to the leak, a new version of Microsoft’s desktop operating system could be named “The New Windows” when it is announced to consumers in the coming months.

The leak originally stated that “The New Windows” would be announced in March 2021, but WalkingCat later corrected this prediction to state that “it is coming, but maybe not next month”.

It has been speculated that this new label refers to the Windows 10X operating system – an upcoming version of Windows 10 designed to deliver an entirely new set of features.

While it may also refer to the upcoming Windows 10 21H1 update, these feature updates for Windows 10 do not normally include labels such as “The New Windows”, leading users to speculate that the long-overdue Windows 10X is set to launch imminently.

Windows 10X
Windows 10X has been designed for modern devices with unique form factors and applications.

The operating system was originally designed to support dual-screen devices, but it has since pivoted its design strategy and will initially roll out to single-display systems.

Support for dual-screen devices is expected in future, however, as the operating system is designed to be compatible with a wide range of form factors.

The Windows 10X operating system is based on Windows 10 but will sport an overhauled designed and functionality aimed at improving the PC experience on lightweight devices.

It supports more advanced touch controls than the standard version of Windows 10, including the ability to move files around by dragging and dropping them.

Additionally, when using Windows 10X, long-pressing on a file will bring up a context menu with options to delete, cut, copy, share, rename, and view properties.

A new Start Menu will feature in the software, too, comprising a dark, translucent box with icons arranged in a grid across its entire area.

A search bar is located at the top of the menu and, most notably, the entire menu and the icons in the taskbar below it are centred for easier accessibility on all devices.

Windows 10X with support for single-screen devices is set to launch this year, with support for dual-screen devices and less conventional form factors expected to roll out a year later.
